Default Cartoonist depicts Colin Powell as Benedict Arnold...in blackface

As if Colin Powell needed one more reminder of the toxic level of political discourse that, in part, fueled his decision to endorse Barack Obama, political cartoonist Gordon Campbell has captured the moment by portraying Powell as Benedict Arnold, in blackface. Inscribed at the bottom of the cartoon is the phrase, "Benedict Powell, Race Patriot."

In remarks reported on by Politicker, Campbell echoed the sentiments of Rush Limbaugh, saying:

"The only reasonable explanation for such a public political "about-face" in the midst of this important election is that Colin Powell, perhaps understandably, wishes to see someone who looks like himself in the White House," Campbell said.

"It's my opinion that General Powell has based his endorsement of Barack Obama on the color of his skin, not his qualifications, his experience or the content of his character."http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/20/cartoonist-depicts-powell_n_136178.html

Yeah, there isn't any inherent racism in this race. Oh no, not at all.

Conservatives really just don't get it. The only thing they're doing is just making the Republican Party look like the party of racists and nutjobs.

I think maybe they are realizing that their 'base' might just desert them and their only hope are the Nazis and skinheads.

Here is the original Benedict Arnold historical image:

    Here is the cartoon image...

I guess the "artist" supports the one-drop rule, because Colin Powell has light skin, nothing like what is shown in the image. If you're at all black, then you're ALL black. Your brain is "black" too, apparently. What a bunch of racist, pathetic losers.

Gen Powell would have announced his support of Obama in the first 5 minutes,if race was the name of the game..He made a decision after McCain showed his true colors.
There is only one Benedict Arnold here: MCCAIN.

Basically, nothing has changed within the party.

Lincoln wasn't that far off from the racist thinking in his own party.

Many Lincoln researchers do acknowledge what would, today, be considered "racist" overtones in Lincoln's early political life. On Oct. 13, 1858, during his famed debates with Judge Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln spoke to what he considered to be basic black and white racial differences "which, in my [Lincoln's] judgment, will probably forever forbid their [blacks] living together on the footing of perfect equality."
In the same speech, Lincoln states, "I agree with Judge Douglas that he [a black] is not my equal in many respects, certainly not in color — perhaps not in intellectual and moral endowments; but in the right to eat the bread without leave of anybody else which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every other man." In this statement, despite his reference to differences in "intellectual and moral endowments," Lincoln shows his belief that both black and white were entitled to equal rights and protection under the Constitution.
