Default Presidential debate: About 57 million viewers

    SEPTEMBER 29, 2008
About 57 Million Tune In for Debate

    By REBECCA DANA

About 57 million people watched John McCain and Barack Obama debate Friday night, according to early data from Nielsen Media Research.

According to Nielsen, about one-third of households in major U.S. markets tuned in.
The major broadcast networks and PBS aired the debate, held in Mississippi and hosted by PBS anchorman Jim Lehrer, as did Telemundo, cable news channels MSNBC, CNN and Fox News, and other channels. ABC won the night among the broadcast networks, followed by NBC, CBS and Fox, according to the Nielsen data.
This year's audience was just under the number that watched the first, and highest-rated, debate between John Kerry and George W. Bush in 2004. The most-watched presidential debate ever was the 1980 matchup between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter that drew more than 80 million viewers.
The second of three presidential debates is set for Oct. 7. The vice-presidential candidates are scheduled to debate foreign and domestic issues on Oct. 2 in St. Louis.

LOL. Perhaps I'll have to switch off shots with the hub. Either way, I'll be hungover as hell come Friday!

^Don't know how old you are Celeb2006, but I am (unfortunately) old enough to remember the 1980 debate between Carter and Reagan. Guess it was actually in 79, but you get my drift. I was 9 at the time, but I remember!! And honestly, it seems that there is soooo much more interest in THIS election, yet, I was fairly young so I cannot say that for sure you know?

Its very interesting to see the other/past debate viewership though. Thanks cmmdee!! Very cool to see!

Wow, I was expecting a lot more viewers than that. Though to be fair, the viewership does seem to steadily go down with each election.

You've got to take into account that it was on a Friday night. A lot of people were probably out. Plus, people were having 'debate parties' so they were watching in groups at one location. I think the VP debate will have even higher ratings.

I find those numbers off. I'm 58 and I remember most of those debates. I don't remember there been anywhere near the interest in those debates. so I'm suspect. EVERYONE I know watched these debates.
If I can't be a good example, then let me be a horrible warning.
