Default Missouri Governor blasts Obama for violating First Amendment with 'Truth Squads'

    State of Missouri-Governor's Press Announcements - 2008

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics.
“St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.
“What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.
“This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.
“Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society.”

This is an absolute disgrace. I don't care who you're voting for. This is a clear violation of the first amendment by using law enforcement.

what plans? where are they? why are they not in this article? who discovered them? Who wrote them?

why is this information not in this article?

Targeting lies is now somehow bad? LOL

Wait, let me wrap my head around this.. someone writes a bunch of untrue stuff, and that person should NOT be slapped with libel or slander?

    Funny.

Also of note, they said they were going after people who violate missouri ETHICS LAWS. People breaking a law are now protected?

Also, it doesn't say that their actions are limited to Obama's campaign.. it says UNTRUE ads or statements, ostensibly ANY.. not just ones against Obama.

So how is this violating anything if they are going after people who are breaking a set of laws pertaining to that state?

Wait, what??? The Obama campaign is insisting on people telling the truth about him, or at least not blatently lying AND they have the chutzpah to ask that the laws of the actual states be used and enforced. The bastards.

Seriously, my mom was talking about this earlier - she called and told me "you know they want to put people in jail who like McCain now?" I said, "what?" She said, "if I talk bad about Obama I think I'm going to jail now." Its almost laughable if it wasn't so sad. I told her, "mom, I think you're all right." She was so confused, she said she read it on a pro-life blog and got confused by the wording, I had to read it to her and explain to her that it was misleading. These rightist blogs are stretching the truth so much its scary, and people are falling for it. All he's saying is that he will pursue legal action if things are printed about him that are libelous. So? I'm in Missouri and its only the old bats who can't read (sorry, mom, love you) are confused about this, and gossiping about it. People are scared for no reason at all, and its being perpetuated by all these dumbass right-leaning blogs (which, by the way, are the only ones reporting on this because its a non-issue).

I personally can't wait to see this Truth Squad go after every person in Missouri who believes Obama is a Muslim. Or that he may not be a US citizen. Or that Trig Palin is not Sarah's. Oh wait...

    Evidence?
    Logic?
    Brain cells??

Once again, vague and scary language meant to scare people into ignorant submission, with no evidence to back it up.

Link or quote for what Obama's campaign actually said? Nope.

Link or quote for laws Obama's camp are referring to? Nope.

Link or quote for the "exposing news reports" mentioned in the opening sentence? Nope.

Link or quote for the laws Obama's camp is supposedly violating? Nope.

Link or quote for the actions Obama actually took that were a "clear violation of the 1st amendment?" Nope.

Wave your finger at the governor. And wave your finger at the news channel's video.

My point still stands: if Obama is using law enforcement (Sheriff's) as stated in the video to stop people from exercising their first amendment rights, then its 100% absolutely wrong.

If it were McCain, I'd say the same thing. Bad enough he voted for that already with CFR- which I am still screaming about.

Last I recall, slander and libel were still crimes in many states.

I guess someone conveniently forgot McCain telling the National Enquirer they would sue if they printed something critical about Palin. McCain, threatening to use laws against libel, what a 1st Amendment violator!!!!!!!!

The First Amendment doesn't cover slander and/or libel.

It's amazing how Obama gets blamed for everything under the sun, but McCain and Palin trying to suppress an ethics investigation in Alaska is okay.

^^Well of course THAT is ok. It's a partisan witchhunt that started months before she was plucked from obscurity and approved by a bi-partisan panel. Not to mention that the only proper parties to weigh Palin's actions is a board appointed by Palin and serving at the whim of Palin (er um, wait, the McCain campaign).

^^And don't forget that most of the politicians who pushed for the investigation are Republicans.

Threatening to sue in a matter in which he has no legal standing, at that. Wait, who is the big, scary, threatening thug again, I'm confused.
