Red face What makes a war hero?

With all due respect, how is being a prisoner of war for a number of years make you a 'war hero'? I am being honest, I want to know -- this isn't a snide sarcastic question.

I started thinking about it after reading this comment

I was absolutely STUNNED when Obama picked Biden. It was the dumbest thing yet to come out of a campaign that started listing to stupid around the time of the European trip. I’ve had a hate-on for Biden since the Clarence Thomas hearings. He’s a boob. A maroon. A dunce. And a dishonest one to boot.

Plus, by choosing Biden, Obama effectively said “what the country wants is a guy…exactly like John McCain. Except a plagiarist and not a war hero.”
    Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I personally think anyone who goes to war is a hero.

However..I think McCain is deemed a "War Hero" because he was given the chance to leave a short time after he was imprisoned but he wouldn't leave without his men and was there another 4 years.

    That's what I'm thinking anyway..??

But to say that about Biden is ignorant. Who says you need to have gone to war to make a good President or VP? That's ridiculous..

I agree that going to war summarily reaches war hero status...I do not think that, in and of itself, qualifies one to be President or being a prisoner or war gives someone any innate foreign policy expertise. It impresses me that someone would put their life on the line, but doesn't trump everything to gain my vote.

May I ask what a "maroon" is? I am familier with the term as a color (albeit spelled slightly differently), but cannot seem to wrap my mind around it as an insult?

Yes he was a P.O.W. but even that is a point of controversy as to whether he received preferential treatment and what he did to receive assistance for his injuries. But that doesn't automatically make anyone a hero to me.

Being shot down and being a P.O.W. is not the same as being on the ground and being in combat like John Kerry or Jim Webb.

    Really??

"Being a P.O.W. is not the same as being on the ground or in combat". Right... it probably has the potential to be 10000 X worse.

Nowadays? Any soldier who has managed to officially serve in a war for any amount of time and not be killed (even if through dumb luck).

The torture that McCain suffered in order to keep others safe is why he's a hero. He could have rolled over on his country and the men he was serving with. But he didn't.
