Default LA Times: Joe Biden's son, brother invested with firm that lobbied him

(The Politico) The L.A. Times is just popped a big story the Obama-Biden folks don't want to be reading the night the Delaware senator introduces himself to the nation: a potential conflict of interest involving Biden and one of the nation's biggest asbestos litigation law firms ó which also happens to be his top contributor.

The report seems to provide fuel to Obama supporters enraged Illinois senator picked a running mate with such deep ties to the D.C. cash-politics-lobbying world.

Investigative reporters Chuck Neubauer and Tom Hamburger:

"When Joe Bidenís brother and son wanted to buy a hedge fund company two years ago, they turned for financing to a law firm that had lobbied the Delaware senatorís office on an important piece of business in Congress ó and in fact had just benefited from his vote.

The firm promised James and Hunter Biden that it would invest $2 million, and it quickly delivered half of that sum.

That deal eventually fell through and the money was returned. But it highlighted the close ties that Joe Biden and his family have developed with SimmonsCooper, an Illinois law firm that specializes in asbestos litigation ó a multimillion-dollar line of business that was under threat in Congress.

In addition to providing financing for the hedge fund deal, SimmonsCooper picked the law firm of another of Bidenís sons, Beau, to work with it on dozens of asbestos cases in Delaware. "It was only natural that we worked with my friend Beau Biden and his firm," said Jeffrey Cooper, longtime former managing partner of SimmonsCooper.

And SimmonsCooper employees have donated about $200,000 to Bidenís campaign efforts since 2001, making the firm his No. 1 donor. All told, SimmonsCooper employees provided much more money to Biden than to any other senator during that period."

Funny how you make such a big deal about Palin's daughter being attacked, and then you keep bringing up Biden's son. In your words, Biden's son isn't running for vice-president and being investigated like Palin is.

NO, I'm pointing out your hypocrisy as well as everyone else going after Palin without going after Biden.

But you were bringing up Biden's son BEFORE Palin got picked, so isn't this about your own hypocrisy?

Go find a post where I mentioned Biden's son before Palin was picked. IIRC, the only thing I did with the Biden selection was laugh. But please, show me my words in case I have forgotten.

Like I've got the time or energy to go back through thread after thread. Although I might be confusing you with witchcurlgirl with the quotes on Biden's son.

Apparently, it's only okay to attack the political sons, who are adult males, aren't pregnant, and are only Democratic. Gotcha. That, in itself, isn't sexist or ageist or anything.

OK the truth is both sides are being a little hypocritical. I'm trying to be completely objective here, and all in all I think we just need to focus on the issues and keep the family drama out of it. We all have family issues we wouldn't want aired out in public, right? I mean everyone is human.

Biden's son is an adult and acted on his own volition. I'm not making the connection between his son's actions and his leadership capabilities. On the other hand, people may see 17 year old Bristol Palin's pregnancy as a poor reflection on Sarah Palin's mothering skills and by (ridiculous) extension question her fitness for higher office. Because you know every leader/co-leader of the free world so far has been so morally uprighteous and infallible.

I see no problem here but of course, controversy has to be created divert us "little people" from the real issues affecting our country. Politics is such a dirty game.

True, no one wants their family business thrown out for public consumption. But Palin knew that she had all of this crap waiting to explode in her family, and she still chose to accept the VP nod, thinking that it wouldn't come out. Palin could have turned down the VP nod and spared her daughter, but she didn't. This is just like John Edwards and the affair. And the same could be said for Biden, if he knew that his son had shady dealings. Don't open yourself and your family up to this kind of scrutiny if you've got bombshells waiting to explode.
