Default John McCain gets $7 million bounce from Sarah Palin pick

McCain Gets $7 Million Bounce from Palin Pick

By Matthew Mosk

Sen. John McCain has taken in $7 million in contributions since announcing Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, a top campaign aide said today.

The money bounce may owe to Palin's appeal with conservative donors, many of whom said privately they had planned on sitting out the campaign this year. The money comes in just under the wire -- after McCain accepts the GOP nomination Thursday, he will accept public funds and no longer be permitted to raise private money for the campaign.

That will not, however, stop McCain and Palin from raising money for the Republican National Committee. In coming weeks, McCain will host four megafundraising events in major cities aimed at bolstering the accounts of the party. Palin, meanwhile, will be sent out to headline more than a dozen fundraising events for the RNC.

Shortly before Palin's announcement, one senior RNC official said McCain's pick "better like doing fundraising."

Like almost everything else she does, hosting these events will be something of a new experience for Palin. When running for governor of Alaska in 2006, Palin raised a total of just $468,400.

Incidentally, Bill Burton, a spokesman for Sen. Barack Obama, declined to reveal how much money the Democratic nominee took in after his speech to 84,000 supporters in Denver .

Palin bump brings McCain 7 million dollars in a day

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AFP) - Republican vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin
proved she could bring in the money as John McCain's campaign raked in
seven million dollars in the first day after he announced his historic pick.

"That's more money than we raised in the fourth quarter of 2007," press
secretary Brooke Buchanan told reporters Saturday after campaign
donations were tallied. "She's great news."

The campaign raised more than 4.5 million online and 2.3 million by mail
and phone in the first day after introducing Palin as McCain's running
mate at a standing-room only rally of 15,000 in Dayton, Ohio Friday.

It was also the highest daily tally since McCain launched his presidential
bid. But it is unlikely that the Palin bump will help McCain catch up with
their Democratic rival Barak Obama before the November 4 election.

The Illinois senator had raised 389 million dollars since launching his
campaign last year and had 68.5 million dollars in his coffers at the
end of July, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

McCain had raised 174 million dollars so far and had 32.7 million in
cash on hand on July 31.

Campaign fundraising is a vital component of the modern US election
machine, allowing candidates to roll out huge advertising blitzes,
finance cross-country swings and build up huge staffs.

McCain raised 27 million dollars in July, a record for the campaign
that still fell far short of Obama's monthly tally of 51 million dollars.

Obama's donor base has surpassed two million people willing to help
fund his bid to become America's first black president.

The McCain campaign said earlier this month that its donor base had
topped 600,000.

Are you for real?

what, 2 wars, 10 trillion in debt, and a broken economy just isn't bad enough for you?

I'm not shocked by the bounce in donations. The Palin pick plays into the conservative right-wing base, which is what McCain wanted.

it defies logic why anybody would actually vote for the exact same people who have trashed america so badly

is it a masochistic complex? Do they not think the country is in bad enough shape?

what's the thought process behind it?

There are a lot of people in America, particularly among the right-wing conservatives that only care about the pro-life, pro-gun and pro-God stance of a politican. Everything else doesn't matter.

Plus, we're talking about a country that decided to keep Dubya around for an extra four years, when we should've known better.

Okay, since you asked: you are IGNORANT to support more of the same.
Don't think about possible short term benefits. Think of the future of the
whole damned planet, including your own offspring!

(this is what I would say to any repug, so don't take it too personally).

I have sent Obama a few hundred dollars starting before Super Tuesday. I made several contributions this week, even sent $15 to Hillary, so I will never call anyone ignorant for donating to the candidate of their choice. However, anyone who will donate to more of the same... I just say bless your heart.

Ignorant.

Thank you for trying to make sure our country definetly goes to Hell. My future offspring and their grandkids will surely thank you, for it, too.
