John McCain thinks rape jokes make him "authentic"

McCain campaign refuses to deny that McCain used to like to tell rape jokes. In fact, they say rape jokes are the kind of thing that Americans love him for.

"He's long said that he's said and done things in the past that he regrets. You've just got to move on, and be yourself - that's what people want. They want somebody who's authentic, and this kind of a stuff is a good example of McCain being McCain." - McCain spokesman yesterday. See Keith Olbermann's take.

I'd like to know the context in which he said the joke. If it was with a bunch of guys, goofing around, I thinks it's totally forgivable...it was 20 years ago.
However, if it was in a speech he gave, or some other political or professional format...it's quite a heinous thing to say.

McCain denied it 22 years ago, and has denied it now....

I'm more annoyed by the fact that he tends to 'forget' previous
comments he made when pressured about them later. He either
outright denies them or 'doesn't remember' them.

Exactly. It's not a laughing matter, so why make the joke? And that being with friends "goofing around" does not make it forgivable. It makes him and his friends look like pigs.

i dont care if it was a joke or not. there is NOTHING funny about rape. NOTHING. there is so much more to make fun of, rape is not funny.
