McCain says he's running to keep country safe

Republican John McCain's first major television ad after knowing for sure that Barack Obama will be his competition is a stark, personal pitch to voters that he knows about war - and knows how to keep America secure.

"Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war," McCain says in the 30-second spot. "When I was 5 years old, my father left for war. My grandfather came home from war and died the next day."

"I was shot down over Vietnam and spent five years as a POW," he continues as historical images appear on the screen and sober music plays in the background. "Some of the friends I served with never came home. I hate war. And I know how terrible its costs are."

"I'm running for president to keep the country I love safe," McCain concludes.

The ad started running yesterday and today in the battleground states of Iowa, Michigan, Colorado, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

Obama is counterpunching with his opposition to the very unpopular war in Iraq and his advocacy of better benefits for veterans.

McCain recently claimed that there “are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today.” In a press conference after his Baghdad tour, McCain told a reporter that his visit to the market today was proof that you could indeed “walk freely” in some areas of Baghdad.

NBC’s Nightly News provided further details about McCain’s one-hour guided tour. He was accompanied by “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead.” Still photographs provided by the military to NBC News seemed to show McCain wearing a bulletproof vest during his visit.
    Sorry, romantic what?

Nice to see the fear mongering is already starting, albeit on a rather low level. Hopefully people won't be such sheep this election.

O.K., people knew this but already he's trying to run on his 'meat and potatoes' of being this 'war hero' POW, etc. etc. etc., so he's a "better" fit to lead, blah blah.

His military and POW record ain't what he makes it out to be.

^I'm liberal, and not once did I think that McCain embellished his 5 years as a POW. I may not agree with most of his politics, but I don't think he would lie about that. But him using that angle to win the Presidency is a differnet story though.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
