Default Does Jesus belong in the Presidential race?

Reprising a tactic his campaign first used in South Carolina earlier this year, Sen. Barack Obama has been peppering Kentucky with fliers that depict the candidate on a pulpit.

The front page bears the message Faith. Hope. Change–above a photograph of Obama in full-sermon mode. A simple white cross and pipes of a church organ serve as backdrop. The flip side features two words: Committed Christian, superimposed on burgundy-toned banners notched to resemble a clergyman’s stole.

Pundits and campaign bloggers quickly made reference to the oft-cited Mike Huckabee Christmas commercial, where many saw a cross only as a subliminal touch.

In a statement, the Obama campaign said the fliers “are part of the Obama campaign’s sincere effort to communicate the values of Senator Obama’s own Christian faith and the hope that people of all faiths and moral backgrounds will come together to address the needs of the ‘least of these’ in our nation and in our world. We’re using them (the fliers) primarily at American Values forums and other campaign events. We are very careful to not campaign within houses of worship and respect both the philosophical boundaries between the church and the campaign, and the very real Internal Revenue Service restrictions related to campaigns and houses of worship.”

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain’s under-the-radar schedule apparently included a recent meeting with “megachurch” pastor Joel Osteen , perhaps best known for his TV ministry. The two reportedly met last weekend in Houston after a McCain fund-raiser, although no press release was issued. Osteen is a best-selling author; his church is described as “non-denominational.”

    *SHUDDER*

That should be burnt, along with any other religiously pandering claptrap from anybody else.

RELIGION HAS NO PLACE IN GOVERNMENT AT ALL.

Seeing that there were a few misguided Mountaineers who thought he was a Muslim at this late date, EVEN after all of the BS with Rev. Wright...I can see why he is flooding Kentucky with these fliers!!

I think that a person's religious beliefs tell a lot about them and could affect their positions on a lot of important issues and the way that they lead the country.

In Obama's case, since there is speculation that he's Muslim, this is clearly an attempt to tell everyone what his religious beliefs truly are, which is something that a lot of voters who are on the fence between Obama and Clinton or Obama and McCain probably find relevant and important.

religion shouldn't affect how you run the country. If it does, you're identical to any nutjob mullah or pagan priest.

Keep fecking religion out of temporal matters please.

I didn't say why it was founded, I just said it was founded on religion. Hence, the In God we Trust on everything and the prayers at the end of meetings, etc.

Was the USA Founded as a Christian Nation?

Sorry Grimm, you aren't the know all, be all of American History.

The motto E Pluribus Unum, ("from many, one") was approved for use on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782. It still appears on coins and currency, and was widely considered the national motto de facto. However, by 1956 it had not been established so by legislation as the official "national motto", and therefore "In God We Trust" was selected. Hence, the Congressional Record of 1956 reads: "At the present time the United States has no national motto. The committee deems it most appropriate that 'In God we trust' be so designated as U.S. national motto."[1]

    1956? LOL

    Do your research, BECKY

Ben Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention, said: "...God governs in the affairs of men.
Wasn't Franklin around long before 1956?

Mmhmm and what did all the other founding fathers have to say? Certainly not "in god we trust" muhdear. That happened a century later.

I thought the candidates do whatever is necessary to gain approval in order to win? Including religion doesn't seem inappropriate to me.

I didn't say any of the founding father's said In God we Trust, did I?

But I do know that most of the 55 did say:

"...the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Savior. Amen".

"Most of the fifty-five Founding Fathers who worked on the Constitution were members of orthodox Christian churches and many were even evangelical Christians. The first official act in the First Continental Congress was to open in Christian prayer, which ended in these words: "...the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Savior. Amen". Sounds Christian to me."
