Default What is the difference between Democrats and Republicans?

    Please don't throw things - it's a genuine question.

I am not asking about specific people - but in general what do the two parties stand for.

When you have a lifelong democrat or republican (regardless of current candidates), what are the values of each party that they find an affinity with.

Stupid question I know, but humour me

I know - and that wasn't my intention. I was just after the basics.

But if necessary, I can make popcorn and sit back and watch

    Democrats like buttsecks.

Republicans like buttsecks but won't admit and want it illegal.

Democrats will raise taxes and screw around with labor unions, protect the accused more than the victims.

Republicans will protect the rich & corporations, kill off the criminal element as rapidly as possible.

    Then they change places.

A trip to Republican party page on Wikipedia has so far taught me that the Republican party was formed by anti-slavery activists.

Seems fairly contradictory when the Democratic party page told me that they stood for liberal civil rights.

I'm a most confused bunny now

Mica, where are you from? Conservatives and Liberals are pretty much the same in every country, it just varies in degree of conservatism or liberalism

I grew up in South Africa during the 1980s so my formative political years were interesting to say the least.

I spent 10 years in the UK where there is the conservative and labour party. Conservatives are for the rich and labour is/was all about the unions.

Now live in Gibraltar where I have yet to figure out the politics

I was interested really in which party was likely to raise/lower taxes, help/not help with education. For/against immigration etc etc.

Look up "Southern Strategy". In 1964, when Dem president Lyndon Johnson backed Civil Rights legislation, the Repubs took the bull by the horns and opposed him, thereby becoming more appealing to Southern racists. The racists then defected from the Democratic party in droves. Up until that time, they were referred to as "Dixiecrats" and many Dixiecrat politicians, like Strom Thurmond, defected as well.
