Obama silent on earmarks as Ill. senator

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Barack Obama is open about the pet projects he has added to the federal budget. But it's a different story when it comes to projects from his years in the Illinois state legislature.

Public records reveal some of the more than $6 million in projects Obama sponsored as a state senator. These include literacy programs, park improvements and jazz-appreciation events.

But those just cover 2 of Obama's nearly eight years in the Illinois Senate. The Associated Press has repeatedly requested further information, but Obama's presidential campaign has not responded.

Obama has made openness a major issue in his presidential campaign. He has criticized Hillary Rodham Clinton for not disclosing the federal spending she has sponsored.
