Default US Armed Forces not winning

    Full Coverage: U.S. Armed Forces

    Reuters

AP - 11 minutes ago WASHINGTON - Robert Gates, the White House choice to be the next defense secretary, conceded Tuesday that the United States is not winning the war in Iraq and warned that if that country is not stabilized in the next year or two it could lead to a "regional conflagration."

There is a lot more on him and this topic, so please add more articles.

Well, at least this Gates guy has taken over Rumsfield, so we might have a litte more clarity on his thoughts. Dumbsfield was closed-minded.

Yeah, this Gates twit wants to send another 30 THOUSAND troops to Iraq.

I'd like to know where they're going to get them from short of a draft.

^ Why does this article appear to be saying that the US is not winning... and then it goes onto to say "stabilizing"? You would almost think that stabilizing would infer to withdraw, but that isn't what it means then?

No, stabilizing means halting the slide into violence.. apparently, the way to do that according to him is adding even more troops

How else are you supposed to without more troops though? Like I understand where all these calls for more troops are coming from. It's pretty necessary, I think. Like, I may not like it but I can understand it.

Yeah, they thought that too in vietnam.. more troops! Add more! It'll solve the problem!

The problem is the population itself, not some army. The population wants to tear itself apart and unless you have marines on every fucking streetcorner 24/7 and declare martial law you won't get any kind of control.. and this is just in Bahgdad.

US forces have already pulled out of the outlying provinces because they've become unpoliceable.. they can't even lock down the capital anymore.

They need to face reality: if you cant lock down bahgdad the rest of the country is moot. Violence is escalating rapidly, essential services are still unrestored after 4 fucking years, 3/4 of the country is being abandoned as too feral and the 'insurgency' has been a self fueled and financed operation for some months now.

Even IF they had a draft (to which the US population would scream its head off and say FUCK THAT) you'd still be pouring more money and more troops into a losing situation. They're repeating vietnam completely, trying to 'Iraqicize' the military (ie hand it over to them) when whole battalions suddenly vanish and join the fight against the US occupation.

The US broke Iraq and it cant fix it. Leaving means the country will tear itself apart and the middle east will go up in flames (but US troops will be out of harms way) but staying means it'll happen ANYWAY and US troops will be stuck in the middle.

    Both ways, you're fucked.
