Exclamation Troops 'took turns' to rape Iraqi, testifies accused US soldier

A US military hearing has examined testimony of how three soldiers took it in turns to try to rape an Iraqi girl aged 14 in Mahmudiya in March.
The girl and three family members were allegedly killed by four US soldiers.

Graphic details of the attack at the family's home came in a sworn statement by one of the accused, James P. Barker.

The preliminary hearing will decide whether to court-martial the four. The case is one of a series of atrocities blamed on US forces in Iraq.

Along with Sergeant Paul Cortez, Private Jesse Spielman, and Private Bryan Howard, Specialist Barker is charged with rape and murder.

The four are alleged to have helped a former private - Steven Green, who has since left the army - plan, carry out and cover up the attack. Mr Green has pleaded not guilty in a federal court and will be tried separately in the US.

A fifth soldier is alleged to have lied to cover up for his colleagues.

    'Whisky and golf'

Investigator Benjamin Bierce interviewed Mr Barker, 23, on 30 June and took down his statement, he told the hearing at a US military base in Baghdad.

On the day of the attack the soldiers had been drinking Iraqi whisky mixed with an energy drink and practising golf strokes at a checkpoint south of Baghdad, Mr Barker's statement said.

One of the soldiers, Steven Green, said he "wanted to go to a house and kill some Iraqis," it alleged.

The four eventually went to a house about 200 metres (yards) away and put the parents and their five-year old daughter in the bedroom, but kept the older girl in the living room.

According to Mr Barker's statement, he and Mr Cortez took it in turns to rape or attempt to rape her.

Mr Barker heard shots from the bedroom, and Steven Green emerged with an AK-47 in his hand saying "They're all dead. I just killed them."

According to the testimony, Mr Green then also raped the girl and shot her dead.

Her body was doused in kerosene and set alight.

The first day of the hearing on Sunday saw an Iraqi army medic describe how he found the bodies of the four Iraqis.

He told prosecutors he was ill for weeks after witnessing the crime scene.

Proceedings are expected to continue for several days.

So did he get the AK-47 from the family then? Since I recall you saying the American troops don't use those guns.

Either that, or the whole thing was pre-meditated and they procured the weapon elsewhere.

It probably wouldn't be hard to find, considering that everyone in Iraq is armed for protection and the AK-47 is the most common automatic weapon in the world..

p.s. Nice courtroom etiquette displayed here..

A U.S. military court in Baghdad heard graphic testimony on Monday of how three U.S. soldiers took turns raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl before murdering her and her family....

Special Agent Benjamin Bierce recalled that Barker described to him how they put a couple and their six-year-old daughter into a bedroom of their home, but kept the teenage girl in the living room, where Barker held her hands while Sergeant Paul Cortez raped her or tried to rape her.

Barker then switched positions with Cortez and attempted to rape the girl but said he was not sure if he had done so, Bierce told the hearing.

Barker also told the special agent he heard shots from the bedroom and shortly afterwards Private Steven Green emerged from the room, put down an AK-47 assault rifle and raped the girl while Cortez held her down....

Defense Attorney Captain Jimmie Culp was blowing chewing gum bubbles while Yribe, sitting to his left, began sucking on a red lollipop during the testimony....

After the rape and murders, [Specialist Barker] wrote that he began to grill chicken wings.

I don't know. something about this whole case is "fishy". I don't buy the story there is something not right about it. I say, dig her up, have an independent autopsy done, produce some DNA or something to corroborate the story.

Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

I still think they've been pressured into giving false testimony against each other. I just find the whole story unbelievable. And the fact they haven't produced the corpse makes it more unbelievable. Dig her up, ship her to the United States and have an independent examination done. Dig up the entire family and ship them over for good measure.

Rape is a common occurrence in war, in fact, it is often used as a weapon. Why would American soldiers be any less suspectible to commiting that type of war crime than any other nationality?

This story is disgusting. I agree that everything should be done to prove all the facts. More autopsies? Go for it. I think it will just provide more damning evidence against these crazy soldiers.

If there is one thing Iraq needs right now, it is a good example of a real legal system. Americans should punish their troops just as severely as Saddam is being punished.

I feel ill when I read this. Imagine your family having to go through this. Your child and siblings, or grandchild, whatever. How can we do this. I live in San Diego, not far from Camp Pendleton, the marines are always on the news for vicious crimes.
If I can't be a good example, then let me be a horrible warning.

That little detail about vicious crimes -- plus the fact that domestic violence is rampant in the armed services -- doesn't jibe with the "perfect" image some people have of the Marines. But it makes sense. Any culture obsessed with violence is bound to be violent.
