Question Afghan president scolds US for bad strategy in 'war on terror'

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai issued a stern scolding to the U.S.-led coalition on Thursday, urging it to reassess its approach to combating terrorism.

Karzai's warning came as Osama bin Laden's second-in-command urged Afghans to revolt against coalition forces, and four more U.S. soldiers were killed in renewed fighting.

Karzai said Thursday the deaths of hundreds of Afghans, including Taliban militants, is "not acceptable."

In the last three to four weeks, 500 to 600 Afghans were killed. (Even) if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land," a clearly frustrated Karzai told reporters in Kabul.

Appearing frustrated, Karzai said coalition efforts need to focus on the root causes of terrorism, rather than simply hunting down militants.

"We must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," Karzai said.

Operation Mountain Thrust, the largest military campaign since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, is currently ongoing, involving as many as 11,000 British, American, Canadian and Afghan troops.

The goal of the campaign is to shut down Taliban militants in four southern Afghan provinces. The groups are blamed for a rash of violence in recent weeks.

More than 600 people -- mostly militants -- have been killed in the offensive, while 14 coalition soldiers have been killed in combat since mid-May.

"It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. In the last three to four weeks, 500 to 600 Afghans were killed. Even if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land," he said.

wow didn't Bush put this guy in office? I'm stunned that he would come out and say any of this, but he's right of course.

"We must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," Karzai said.
won't ever happen b/c Bush and his cronies love the money they get from the Saudis and oil connections they make, they supplied the "terrorists" w/ weapons in the 80's, and they keep them highly motivated w/ hate everytime a marine kills another innocent civilian or everytime another sanction is placed against the civilians or everytime another massacre is ignored.

STRATEGY? when did Bush acquire one?!? Look, the Joint Chiefs said the boy's war plan was FAULTY three YEARS ago. He would not take time from the campaign party circuit to WORK on it. The story of his life.
