Red face US politician says Canada is a security risk

    BETH GORHAM
    CANADIAN PRESS

WASHINGTONA U.S. congressman who says Canada is in denial about terrorism (despite its troops outshooting US marines in Afghanistan 2 to 1, and holding that country together with spit and a prayer after the yanks all but abandoned it for Iraq) is applauding as "sound advice" the idea of shutting out immigrants and refugees until the country fixes its security risks.

Indiana Republican John Hostettler, who held a hearing yesterday on Capitol Hill, also said the U.S. House of Representatives shouldn't agree to delay strict new border identification measures in light of Canada's sweeping anti-terror arrests last week.

"We do not want to have to worry about a neighbour that has a very different attitude than we do about terrorism," (Yes, we don't run around like headless chickens, pissing our pants and rampaging across the globe in a vain attempt to cover up cowardice with bluster. In short, we're calm) Hostettler said after the meeting.

Americans, he added, would demand the Canada-U.S. border be shut down in the event of another terrorist attack like the one on Sept. 11, 2001, even if Canada played no role. (re: headless chicken reactionary emotionalism)

He accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of "laughing off" an alleged terrorist beheading plot when he quipped that he can "live with all these threats as long as they're not from my caucus." (re: Calm)

Hostettler, who chairs a judiciary subcommittee, had nothing but praise for the views of David Harris, a Canadian security analyst who used to be with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

Harris told the legislators Canada's immigration system is a big part of its terrorist problem, noting the country takes in double the number of immigrants and three or four times the refugees as the United States.

He suggested a moratorium on newcomers and opposes extending a deadline requiring a passport or high-technology identification card at land crossings beyond Jan. 1, 2008.

"We are in a life-and-death struggle and a race against time," he said.

If the views of subcommittee members were any indication, Canada's push for a delay could face a rough ride in the House. Representatives facing re-election have been anxious to show they're tough on security and not solely penalizing the Mexican border with a huge crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Canada is worried the ID plan will cause huge lineups at the border, seriously denting trade and tourism. U.S. senators have already agreed to postpone the measure until June 1, 2009, but the issue must be resolved between the House and Senate.

Despite a recent U.S. government report that says the plan likely can't be implemented in time, a U.S. Homeland Security official insisted yesterday it will be finished. "I have every expectation we will hit the deadlines," said Paul Rosenzweig, acting assistant secretary for policy development. "Every day of delay is another day of risk on the northern border." (chances of being killed by a terrorist: 50 million to 1. Chances of being hit by lightning: about 5000 to 1. CALM THE FUCK DOWN.)

Beth Gorham of the Canadian Press can take this article she wrote, get on a bicycle and go screw herself half-way around the world. What do I care from Canada? Most of our weak men and gutless women run up there when the going gets rough. The only tough and rugged canadians i met were in the canadian navy. I wouldn't mess with 'em. But all this "canadian superior, america dumbasses" stuff is strictly from hunger.

I just re-read the article, i'm not detecting any 'canada rocks, us sucks!' bias... if anything, it's the other way around with the US rep accusing Canada of being some sort of terrorist haven.

"We do not want to have to worry about a neighbour that has a very different attitude than we do about terrorism," Hostettler said after the meeting.
The reason Canada isn't as militaristic is because the military-industrial
complex threatened Canada back in the late 1940s if it didn't back down
    on the Avro Arrow project.

This idiot Hostettler ought to know that, if he has any pull at all.

Canada developed a state-of-the-art jet back in the late 1940s
and plenty of other countries wanted to buy it to defend themselves
from regime change, which has happened a lot more than people think.
The US didn't want countries like Guatemala and Chile defending
themselves with the Avro jet, because it was better than theirs
at the time. So they threatened to aim their Beaumarc-II missiles
at Toronto if we didn't dismantle the Arrow. Canadian politicians
were intimidated into shelving the project, and into turning our
military into a shadow of its former self.

Now they're complaining that we aren't doing our part. That's
    fucking typical.

I know, eh? The Arrow could fly circles around anything at the time, and even 20 years later. An amazing piece of engineering.

I don't think people should apologize for disliking a Canadian column
in a Canadian newspaper that criticizes American politicians yet again.
But I felt compelled to bring that element of US foreign policy to light -
the reason Canada is not more militaristic is because of we were threatened.

Grimmlock, it's your commentary that made the article for me!

And Bush should really concentrate on completely turning his own country into a bastion of constant fear and paranoia before he attempts to export the phenomenon. I hear there are even some people left who don't buy into everything he says. Tsk-tsk, sloppy, Georgy-boy!
