Once again, the govt. wants control over our bodies!
Wyden defends assisted suicide law
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., told a Senate subcommittee today that some of his personal concerns about Oregon’s physician-assisted suicide law have not been realized.
Wyden, who has always defended Oregon’s right to decide whether to allow physician-assisted suicide, has said for years that he personally opposes the practice. He voted against physician-assisted suicide both times it was on the Oregon ballot.
Before coming to Congress in 1981, Wyden was an advocate for senior citizens. Wyden had been concerned that the Oregon law may not have safeguards to protect the poor elderly.
“While I do not know how I would vote were the issue to appear on the Oregon ballot once more,” Wyden said at today’s hearing, “I believe it is time for me to acknowledge that my fears concerning the poor elderly were thankfully never realized, and the safeguards appear to have worked well in preventing potential abuses.”
Wyden has fended off attempts to pass federal laws that would override Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. And in January, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that under current law, the Justice Department could not forbid physicians from prescribing controlled substances for assisted suicide.
Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., chaired the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution hearing to explore both assisted suicide and euthanasia.
“States should understand the unintended consequences and slippery slope of doctor-assisted suicide and euthanasia,” Brownback said.
