Vice president tells VANITY FAIR his image might be better if he spent more time trying to improve it, “but that’s not why I’m here”

New York, N.Y. – In her new memoir, NOW IT'S MY TURN(Simon & Schuster/Threshold Editions, 2006), Mary Cheney writes that when she told her parents she was gay, the first words out of her father’s mouth “were exactly the ones that I wanted to hear: ‘You’re my daughter, and I love you, and I just want you to be happy.’”

VANITY FAIR editor Todd Purdum reports that Mary Cheney tells her story in a voice very much like her father’s, and that she came out to her parents when she was a junior in high school, on a day when, after breaking up with her first girlfriend, she skipped school, ran a red light, and crashed the family car. Cheney writes that her mother hugged her, but then burst into tears, worried that she would face a life of pain and prejudice.

When Purdum asks the vice president whether he thinks gay people are born that way, Cheney scrunches up his mouth, fixes him with a look that says “Nice try,” then says: “I’m not going to get into that. Those are deeply personal questions. You can ask.”

Mary Cheney tells Purdum that her father “has very little tolerance for bullshit, pardon my French.” She also says that one common reaction from people who have read the manuscript of her book is “‘Wow, you guys really have this close-knit, loving family,’ and it always strikes me as ‘Yeah, of course we do.’ It was very surprising to me that people would think we didn’t.”....

It's ok! But because being gay is a choice, you're second class citizens. But don't feel bad about it, because it's OK TO BE GAY*

"You're my daughter. and I love you.." sounds like something a parent would say after their kid has done something wrong. You are my daughter, and I love you...even thought you are a drug addict, or ran over a pedestrian, or married a total prick..etc. etc.

Ok, I've got nothing good to say about Dick Cheney, but where did he say it's a choice? I don't see that anywhere.

And if my kid told me they were gay, I might very well say "you're my son/daughter, and I love you." What's wrong with that? It's just reassurance during what was probably a very anxious situation for the girl.

Honestly guys, I don't see anything wrong here. If they rejected her, or tried to convert her, or condemed her to hell, sure. They just said they loved her. What gives?

IE: Of course they're born that way, but I'm not answering that question because if i answer it honestly i'll lose support of the fundie assholes who prop my sinking administration up, and without that i cant make scads of money.

This is all moot anyway, because Mary Cheney is gutless, coward of a dyke who sold out her kind so she could make money. She's part of a campaign to make gays ar marginalized as possible. It's like Jews for Hitler. Frankly, I'd spit in her face if i saw her on the street, the fucking traitor.

She had the ears of the most powerful elected officials in the land, and yet chose to continue to support a party that denigrates her relationship with her life partner, and the relationships of millions of gays and lesbians who have no access to power, no job security, no support from their families for that matter, something she clearly does have. If her politically powerful family loves her unconditionally -- something she's probably going to be spewing ad nauseum on her book tour -- then there was little risk to her to stand tall and make a difference. What a path she chose.

I think of her gutless existence and then I think of someone like the late Laurel Hester, who, in both life and death, has made an impact on the lives of everyday gays and lesbians. The former NJ police officer battled the bigoted Ocean County Freeholders -- while battling terminal cancer, for god's sake -- to leave her pension benefit to her partner, is now a giant in the gay rights movement.

Has he ever come out & said that he personally believes it's a choice? I don't know, just asking. If not, he may actually have beliefs contrary to his administration, and is just a sell-out. Just shmaybe. I am not at all detail-oriented in my knowledge of current political issues. Well, you said he supports the bans on gay marriage, so there's something. Even so, has he ever specifically addressed the "choice" issue?
