The GOP-led Congress yesterday gave the gun industry a free pass from lawsuits by crime victims - sparking a nasty broadside from fellow Republican Mayor Bloomberg.
A new law, which President Bush has vowed to sign, bars victims or local governments from suing gunmakers over crimes committed with the weapons they sell.

"Our laws should punish criminals who use guns to commit crimes, not law-abiding manufacturers of lawful products," Bush said in a statement.

The law passed by a lopsided 283-144 vote and had already cruised through the Senate over the summer.

Bloomberg joined Democrats in lambasting the bill as a "disgraceful" attempt to placate the big-money gun lobby at the expense of gun-crime victims and law enforcement.

"The House of Representatives has today passed a disgraceful piece of legislation that will give gun manufacturers immunity from acting negligently," Bloomberg said.

The powerful National Rifle Association made the law its top legislative priority after it warned that spreading lawsuits could bankrupt gunmakers.

Gun companies could still be sued for defective products, and criminals could be held accountable for their own actions.

Opponents say the law would have blocked lawsuits filed by six victims of convicted Washington-area snipers John Muhammad and Lee Malvo, who won a $2.5 million settlement from the gun dealer who sold the killers their rifle.

Bloomberg, facing reelection in liberal New York, broke ranks with national party leaders for the third time in a month to blast the bill.

"Granting the gun industry immunity will make it easier for criminals to get firearms and put our law enforcement officers at greater risk," the mayor said.

Bloomberg last month rebuked Bush for suspending fair-wage protection for workers rebuilding the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. He also refused to back Chief Justice John Roberts, calling him too conservative to be the nation's top jurist.
I still cannot believe the GOP continues to act so arrogantly, given thier current troubles. No right to sue? Bastards.
