Not an easy decision, but if his family has frozen him out of their lives, what else can this guy do?
I admire cases I know personally, where gay people have waited, and waited, till their families need them (often desperately) and invited them back into the fold. But why should they wait till their mothers are ill or their sisters are in poverty to be declared family again?
My manners dictate that a fight should never get this ugly. Still, who am I to say? If my entire family rejected me because of who I love and how I live, that might be the straw that breaks me and I'd take the fight to them, whether they like it or not.
