Thumbs down President Obama doesn't support gay marriage

    Say again?

Axelrod's point, if you watch the video, (click the link at the bottom) is that the President is for "separate but equal" benefits for gay couples. Putting aside the obvious horror of that statement, we can't get "equal" benefits because of DOMA. That would be the law that the President routinely defends in court against our civl rights challenges, and the law about which the President has done nothing to get repealed, even though he promised to repeatedly during the campaign.

    This is the key quote:

The president opposed Proposition 8 at the time. He felt that it was divisive. He felt that it was mean-spirited, and he opposed it at the time. So we reiterated that position yesterday. The president does oppose same-sex marriage, but he supports equality for gay and lesbian couples, and benefits and other issues, and that has been effectuated in federal agencies under his control. He's supports civil unions, and that's been his position throughout. So nothing has changed.

Actually, a lot has changed. And, Obama's position has to change. It's time for Obama to get on the right side of history. And, we have to let him know that's where he needs to be. We won't accept separate, but equal.

AMERICAblog Gay: 'The president does oppose same-sex marriage but he supports equality for gay and lesbian couples' - Axelrod to MSNBC
I wonder how this retard would feel about separate drinking fountains and separate seating sections.

    Amazing.

Good thing the lawmakers back in the day weren't anything like Obama, or else Obama would never have been fucking BORN or President.

    Fuck this guy. Seriously.

that's always been his position though. this is nothing new. even during the campaign i knew he was against gay marriage but for something like civil unions.
don't get me wrong, i don't agree with this. but i don't know why this is news now when it's been public knowledge forever.
the fact that obama has a reputation as being one of the more liberal democrats is testament to just how far to the right american politicians are, including democrats, because he's really not that liberal at all. i think the press just built him up to be this ultra-liberal saviour because compared to the ultra-neo con repubs he does look like that but obama's never been a crusader. look at his senate voting record. the man has shied away from making public decisions on controversial issues forever.

but no matter how annoying this is, just remember that the alternative - a republican in the white house - is always worse.

gay marriage will only ever happen in the US if the supreme court says it can. it's the only way real, immediate, good change has ever happened in the US. but when it comes to declaring wars and bombing shit and passing crap like the patriot act, then you can expect presidents and congress to get the ball rolling.

it's not new, it's just a repetition. One would hope his stance would have changed, but given how his DOJ has been acting concerning all things LGBT i suppose not.

Funny though.. before the election he was all about gay marriage. Now he's opposed because "god is in the mix", as he said.

What, did he find jesus in the intervening 2 years? What a fraud.

Lastly, the whole "the GOP is worse" card doesn't really work. The GOP doesn't promise the moon, take money and votes, and then deliver nothing from people with LGBT rights as a major concern.

They just tell you straight up they hate you.

I like hatred right out in the open where I can see it.

It's the hatred that hides behind smiles and promises that worries me.

sure but i'll still take the lesser of two evils and that's what the democratic party is.

You make a good point, but I have reached my limits with the Westboro Baptist Church's brand of hatred out in the open. Not to mention their hatred for decent clothes, decent hairstyles, etc.

In what way are they less evil? They've continued most of Bush's horror. The differences are vanishingly small.

Exactly! There's no difference. The evil seems equal.

Clearly they hate women. No one that liked them would be letting them out of the house looking like this.

This is not a shock. He said this during his campaign. His personal preference is for civil unions, but he didn't feel strongly enough to try and block marriage laws.

but there are still considerable differences.
if you're a woman, a minority or gay, you're still better off with a democrat in power.
i get that you're frustrated with obama and the lack of progress on so many issues but come on, it's still better than having palin and the tea baggers and the fundie christian right anywhere near the white house. there is a difference.
the u.s. is leaning to the right, there is no denying that. and not just the u.s., look at canada in the past half decade or so.
and in the u.s., it's affecting both parties and the population in general. it sucks, and it's frustrating, but right wing is still better than far right wing, which is the only viable alternative. the only thing we can do is ride it out and wait for the tide to change and maybe the u.s. will get their version of a pierre trudeau when it does?
countries have the governments they deserve. they are the reflection of what the majority wants. and right now in the u.s. the majority doesn't want progressive politicians.
