Default Laura Bush speaks about car crash which killed friend

Laura Bush, the former US First Lady, has spoken for the first time about causing a car crash in which a high school friend was killed.

In a new book, Mrs Bush claimed she suffered years of guilt and lost her religious faith over the tragedy which happened when she drove through a stop sign as a teenager
The former Laura Welch, the daughter of a successful Texas property developer, has previously refused to be drawn on the 1963 car crash in her hometown of Midland that claimed the life of a friend when she was only 17.
She and a girlfriend were hurrying to a drive-in cinema when, driving her father's car, she ran through a stop sign on a dark country road and hit a car being driven by Mike Douglas, also 17, a star sportsman and popular student at her school. Nobody was ever charged and there was no evidence that either driver had been drinking.
In the forthcoming memoir, Spoken from the Heart, Mrs Bush admitted she and her friend were chatting at the time but also blamed various other factors, including the darkness of the road, the small size of the stop sign and even the handling of the victim's model of car.

"In those awful seconds, the car door must have been flung open by the impact and my body rose in the air until gravity took over and I was pulled, hard and fast, back to earth," she said.
"The whole time I was praying that the person in the other car was alive. In my mind, I was calling 'Please, God. Please, God', over and over and over again."
Mrs Bush said her guilt over Mr Douglas's death deepened because she never attended his funeral nor contacted his parents and she said she ultimately dealt with the crash by trying not to talk or think about it.
"I lost my faith that November, lost it for many, many years," she said. Her prayers that her friend would live were ignored and "the only answer was the sound of Mrs Douglas's sobs on the other side of that thin emergency room curtain".
Among the other recollections in the book, there is an account of an incident in which the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, puzzled staff by asking for two glasses of ice but no drink during a visit to the White House.
Mrs Bush writes: "They requested glasses of ice before we began a long receiving line. The staff dutifully produced them, and the prince removed a flask from his pocket and added to each a small splash of what I presume was straight gin, so that they might be fortified before the hours of shaking hands."

Another revelation is her suggestion that she, George W Bush and nearly a dozen staff may have been poisoned when they went to Germany for a G8 Summit in 2007.
They became mysteriously sick and the president was confined to bed for part of the trip. The Secret Service "went on full alert" and searched the resort of Heiligendamm for possible poisons.
Doctors suspected they had contracted a virus but Mrs Bush noted that a military aide still cannot walk properly and another member of staff never recovered full hearing in one ear.
"We never learned if any other delegations became ill, or if ours, mysteriously, was the only one," she said.
Mrs Bush also takes her husband's Democrat opponents to task for "calling him names".
She singled out politicians such as Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, and Harry Reid, the Democrat leader in the Senate, for "graceless" slurs such as "incompetent", "loser" and "liar" which "revealed the petty and parochial nature of some who serve in Congress".
She also defended her husband's more controversial presidential decisions, saying that on the eve of the Gulf War he told their daughters he "prayed Saddam Hussein would disarm", and that he flew over the Hurricane Katrina devastation because he did not want his convoy clogging up relief efforts.

So basically she blamed everyone except herself? Why am I not surprised.

Maybe if she hadn't been running her mouth she would've been focused on the dark road and spotted the stop sign. And how was the victim's car suppose to handle when another car runs a stop sign?

She NEVER said she was sorry to the people she hurt. She NEVER talked to the family of the victim again. What a completely cold, insensitive, heartless bitch.

Did anyone read "American Wife"? It's a novel based on Laura's life with embarrassing sex scenes (there's a thread about the sex scenes in here somewhere). In it, she ends up humping the brother of the boy she killed, getting pregnant by him, and having an abortion from her grandmother's lesbian lover. I recommend it. It's an entertaining summer read and made me compassionate towards Laura and her choices. I think the crash and its aftermath defined her whole life.

Are people serious with the comments about how she shouldn't have been talking? Who here drives in total silence when you have a friend in the car with you? No one that I know of.

I think that this was just a tragic and horrific accident. These things happen all the time. I don't like to judge her for this, or even for saying that it was dark and the stop sign was small. I think it's a normal reaction to try to justify in her head WHY she didn't see the stop sign.

One of my friends was driving a vehicle which crashed in a freak accident, killing her best friend who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and on several occasions, I heard the deceased girl's mother say angrily that the driver "killed" her daughter. It was a similar situation... they were talking in the car, she got distracted and the car veered to the left, she overcorrected, and it flipped. Maybe this boy's family feels the same way about Laura. What they say to news outlets and what they say in real life, to their friends and acquaintances, could be totally different. I know it was in my friend's situation. Maybe they've made comments like that to other people and she knows about it and is afraid to approach them. You never really know the backstory behind these things.

It's hard enough to deal with the fact that you were behind the wheel in an accident where a friend, or anyone for that matter, was killed. When you already dealing with incredible grief, shame, and guilt over something like that, I can understand not feeling comfortable taking a beating from the victim's family as well for what truly was an accident.

It was a tragic accident that could've been avoided if Laura knew how to stay focused on the road while talking to her friend. But instead of taking full responsibility for it, she only compounds the tragedy by trying to spread the blame around, including blaming the victim's car when she was the one who ran the stop sign.

It was a tragic accident that she was completely responsible for, and yet years after the fact she's still trying to avoid taking full responsibility for it.

When Im listening to her speak (on Larry King tonight)of the tragedy as she calls it, she was full of guilt. She expresses it sincerely, she gives me no reason to think she is blaming anyone but her self. She said she did it and she lived with tremendous guilt. Things like this can happen to good people. Anyone of us could have an accident like this at any time. I admit Ive taken my eyes off the road to look back at my baby in her carseat, and actually Ive taken my eyes off the road more than once in my years driving. it happens whether you are 17 or 47. She admits she made a mistake running the stop sign, and it was an accident. They do happen. Cudos to those of you that have never taken your eyes off the road.

I agree. And I like Laura. She seems like a supremely decent person and a true lady.

Maybe she thought she had to marry Bush as some kind of atonement?
