Texas lawmaker to introduce anti-immigration bill - Yahoo! News

AUSTIN, Texas – A Texas lawmaker says she plans to push for a law similar to Arizona's get-tough immigration measure.

San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle report Wednesday that Republican Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball says she will introduce the measure in the January legislative session.

The new Arizona law would require local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status — and make it a crime for immigrants to lack registration documents.

Riddle says if the federal government did its job "Arizona wouldn't have to take this action, and neither would Texas."

Democrats say such legislation is misguided and predict it will hurt the GOP politically.

Oh JFC this is retarded. HPD has already said it will only run a check for immigration status of people in police custody and being charged with an actual crime. You get picked up for unpaid parking tickets they could not care any less, you get picked up for assault yeah you'll probably end up being deported.

This Debbie woman is a fucking dumbass and wasting funds and time.

    A. Not surprised.
    B. Riddle says if the federal government did its job "Arizona wouldn't have to take this action, and neither would Texas."
I do agree with that statement. Everyone knows something needs to be done but nobody wants to be the one to do it for fear of being labelled racist.

The only thing I'm shocked about is that Texas let Arizona beat them to the punch with this crazy anti-immigration bill. Texas usually brings the crazy first in that region.

Riddle is right that the federal government needs to do something to try and stem illegal immigration. But this crazy push by Texas & Arizona is just a smokescreen to scapegoat illegals as the boogeymen, especially since both states will eventually see Hispanics become the majority. The Tea Party strikes again.

Even if the illegals weren't a problem, there would still be a backlash against the growing Hispanic population in Texas, Arizona and eventually California. It falls into the Tea Party fear of 'losing their America.'

Other states have to deal with illegals, not just Hispanics, and they haven't gone off the deep end like Texas & Arizona.

Isn't it illegal anyway to be here illegally? LOL.

Once again, I think these laws/bills are not going to be successful in the sense that WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE ILLEGALS HERE! It will NEVER change.

Well, not every state has as big a problem with this as Texas, Arizona and California. That is fact. It's not something we've all dreamed up. And until the government does its job, the states are going to be pushing this type of thing.

I'm surprised this started in AZ rather than TX first.

I think the thread title, as well as the artcile title, are misleading. Its not anti-immigration, its just to enforce existing immigration laws. The states have no power to legislate immigration.

Exactly. We will always have illegals in this country, no matter what policies are put into place.

Yeah, other states don't have as big a problem with illegals as Texas, Arizona & California, but it's still a problem. I don't have any great sympathy for people who sneak into the country like thieves in the night. But like Cmmdee said, we will always have illegals. The government needs to start doing something to try and control the flow of illegals, but they won't ever stop it. Illegals come from too many places, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, etc to ever completely stop the flow.

Mexico is the biggest problem because of the border. But there's no way to effectively patrol/monitor hundreds of miles of border. Even if we build a wall or fence, it still won't work. The biggest issue with what they want to do in Arizona & Texas is that no one can tell the difference between Hispanic/Hispanic looking illegals and naturalized/natural born Hispanic/Hispanic looking citizens. Which means you're going to have a lot of innocent people getting their civil rights trampled because they are mistaken for illegals.

I lived in the Northeast at a certain point in my childhood and a lot of the stuff that's said about Mexicans and others from south of the border today is pretty much what I heard when I was a kid. It was about all sorts of Latinos and Puerto Ricans in particular. And really, how can they quantify how many illegals there are? How can they say it's a problem that's growing when there is no real way of making a head count? And when are they going to start looking at all the illegals from Europe? I know for a fact that for about 200 bucks you can get yourself papers that will state you are legally in the country and I know a lot of Euros who have bought them. At least two of them are still in the States, illegally. And those are just people I know personally. It's just much easier to target one group and I guess it's easier to blend in when you don't have dark skin.

^ Not to be pedantic, but Puerto Ricans are American, and are never illegals here in the US.
