Default Sen. Arlen Spector tells Michelle Bachmann to 'act like a lady'

The deeply odd couple of Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Penn.) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) appeared together on a Philly radio station yesterday -- and things got ugly in short order.

    Audio link. courtesy RCP.

The exchange, broadcast on 1210 AM's Dom Giordano Show [but not archived on the station's site], began when Specter challenged Bachmann to articulate what, exactly, she stands for, according to a readout on the clash published by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's lively Early Returns blog.

Bachmann first laid out her agenda -- cutting taxes and killing President Obama's health reform bill -- at considerable length.

When Specter tried to counter, Bachmann, darling of the Tea Party movement, kept on talking, which didn't sit well with the one-time Philadelphia DA, who is a stickler for politeness and protocol.

"I'm going to treat you like a lady," Mr. Specter shot back. "Now act like one."

Ms. Bachmann replied, "I am a lady."

Things went on along this line for a while -- with Specter later asking Bachmann to "act like a lady," according to the PPG's Daniel Malloy.

Bachmann is hardly a beloved figure in Democratic circles. But how many liberal women, whom Specter badly needs to defeat front-running Pat Toomey, would appreciate being told to "act like a lady" by a male debate partner?Specter tells Bachmann to "act like a lady" - Glenn Thrush - POLITICO.com

Here are a few things I think about it. He's an old dude who was trying to get a word in edgewise. Second, she's nuts and he knows it. I think repugs like her are one of the reasons he switched over to the Dems. Third, I think most women would probably get their backs up over a comment like that, so it was probably ill-advised, but when confronted with blatant stupidity and crazy it's probably hard to keep your cool. So I vote to give him a pass. And I suggest she stop being such an asshole.

As much as I despise Bachmann, Spector screwed up with the 'act like a lady' comment. It comes off as condescending and sexist even if that's not how he meant it. Not a smart move in an election year.

Yeah, I know but still, that woman could drive nearly anyone to lose the plot. She's nuts and he knows it.

True. But people like Bachmann, Beck and Rush are negative, toxic people who thrive off of pushing people's buttons just for the purpose of getting an emotional reaction. The angrier you get, the happier they are.

When you're dealing with people like that you have to keep your guard up at ALL times, because they're always looking for the right buttons to push.

Good point, although he's also known for being a crotchety mr. hospital corners.

Yes, he's known as an old crazy grouch. But I see a different side of Mr. Specter. He has a summer home where we have ours, and I often see him tipsy (shitfaced, really) and having a grand old time in restaurants......

His dinner tables always look like they're having a ball. And all the other patrons are all 'Evening, Senator' and he's all friendly back. He doesn't seem like the same guy that I see on the news all year.

Probably because he takes his job seriously, which I can respect. I'm glad hear this about him. He's always been an interesting character and he's been on the scene for as long as I can remember. I was actually pretty shocked when he switched parties but good for him for following his own belief system.

And when I think about it, would anyone be upset if she had told him to 'act like a gentleman' if he was being an asshole? I'm trying to figure out if I would be upset about that.

Would it have been sexist for her to ask him to "act like a gentleman"?

He does come off like one of those angry old guys yelling at the kids to get off his lawn.

Cranky is the word I usually associate with Spector.
