Question Officials: Anti-Muslim images are protected speech

(I dunno, would these officials have felt the same if it were, let's say, anti Jewish postings and cartoons near synagogues and whatnot?)

Officials: Anti-Muslim images are protected speech - Yahoo! News

MINNEAPOLIS Two Minnesota prosecutors say they won't file charges against a man who investigators say admitted posting anti-Muslim images in front of a mosque, a Somali-owned store and other spots.
They say the cartoons are protected under the First Amendment.
The posters put up last month in the St. Cloud area depicted images such as the Prophet Muhammad engaged in bestiality and an Islamic crescent with a swastika inside it.
Some in the community say there should be legal consequences. But the chief prosecutors in both counties where the cartoons were found said they must be considered free speech.
Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall called it a "classic First Amendment case." Benton County Attorney Robert Raupp says religious criticism is protected speech, even if it is offensive.

I don't see why they would not feel the same way. There could be littering fines perhaps if they left papers under windshield wipers.

I can see where the prosecutors are coming from, unfortunately. It's the same thing that happens if people start posting racist or anti-Semetic images in front of black churches & synagogues. If the people that posted the anti-Muslim images had destroyed private property then it would be seen as more of a crime.

The First Amendment does protect free speech, even if it's free speech that people don't like. As long as that speech isn't directly trying to incite violence it can't be treated as a crime. That's why people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck get to spew as much garbage as they do with no legal consequences.

Exactly, they can say what they want. It becomes a problem when they start spray painting shit.

Yup. When people expand their free speech to spray painting things that's when they break the law, because they're defacing private or public property.

Agree - it's free speech, even though their actions were disgusting.

The Supreme Court has ruled that obscenity is not protected speech. And someone bonking livestock, as well as any graphical depiction of bestiality, probably qualifies as obscenity.
