Former Mo. House speaker Jetton charged with assault, accused of hitting and choking woman

Former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton was charged with second-degree assault Monday stemming from a woman's claim that he hit her in the face several times and choked her.

The 42-year-old Republican was named in a complaint filed Monday in Scott County Circuit Court in southeastern Missouri. The complaint alleges that on Nov. 15, Jetton "caused serious physical injury" by hitting the woman on the head and choking her, which resulted in unconsciousness and the loss of function for part of her body.

Second-degree assault is a felony that carries a prison sentence of up to seven years.

According to a probable cause statement filed by a Sikeston police detective, Jetton and the woman discussed having sex, he came to her home on Nov. 15 and stayed until the next day. Jetton poured her a glass of wine in the kitchen while she remained in the living room. After drinking wine while watching a football game, the woman reported fading in and out of consciousness several times during the evening.

Police say the woman claimed Jetton hit her in the face several times "very hard" and she said she woke up at one point, lying on the floor as Jetton was choking her. The woman said she then remembered waking up while Jetton was behind her having sex in the bedroom. Police say there were bruises on the outside of the woman's thighs, left side and breast that were photographed.

According to the probable cause statement, the woman reported "blank spots" in her memory that she had not experienced before while drinking.
The Associated Press is not identifying the woman.

Jetton, who is from the southeast Missouri town of Marble Hill, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. There was no immediate response to a message sent to his e-mail address.

Online court records show that bond was set at $2,500 for Jetton and that he is required to avoid the woman. It was not known Monday if Jetton had been arrested. The probable cause statement indicates that Jetton was not in custody.

Police in Sikeston referred calls for comment to the city attorney, who was out of the office and unavailable for comment. The Scott County Sheriff's Office said it had not taken Jetton into custody.

A woman who answered the telephone at the Scott County prosecutor's office said no one was available to comment.

Jetton was elected to the Missouri House in 2000 and was chosen as speaker in 2005. He left the House after the 2008 session because of term limits and now works as a political consultant in Jefferson City.

Online court records show that in October, that Jetton and his former wife agreed to a divorce settlement. The lawyer who represented Jetton in that case did not immediately return a message Monday.

Jetton faced criticism earlier this year for his work against legislation favored by utilities to help build new power plants. His consulting firm set up an opposition group and warned electric customers to be wary of the bill. That prompted a heated argument on the Senate floor about Jetton's activities. The legislation never cleared the Senate.

During the 2008 campaign, Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder criticized Jetton for working as a political consultant for three Republican state senators and a Republican House member while simultaneously serving as House leader.

Two years earlier, the Missouri Ethics Commission had said that no law prohibited such an arrangement but expressed "serious concerns" about the ability of a lawmaker-consultant to avoid legal violations and "about the appearance of impropriety" associated with it.

In 2004, when Jetton was the No. 2-ranking House official, he heckled Democratic Gov. Bob Holden during the State of the State speech, yelling: "Release the money, governor!"

It seems Missouri is looking to up it's profile through sex any way it can.

Former Missouri Speaker of the House and opponent of "deviate sexual intercourse" Rod Jetton is facing felony charges for an S&M session gone horribly wrong, because a drunk lady never said "green balloons," allegedly.

The conventional wisdom on Jetton was that he'd go down for corruption, since he ran a political consulting biz while he was still in the state legislature. (All it took was a felony arrest to get quit that gig to "spend time with his family.") So this is an unexpectedly depraved turn:

Detective Bethany McDermott's affidavit says Jetton went to the woman's home around 9 p.m. Nov. 15 with two bottles of wine, which he allegedly opened alone in her kitchen. After drinking some of the wine and watching football, the statement said, the victim "began ‘fading' in and out and remembered losing consciousness several times."

The affidavit says Jetton and the alleged victim agreed on a safe word - "green balloons" - that could be used to stop sexual relations during the evening.

Instead, the affidavit says, Jetton hit her on the face and choked her before engaging in intercourse. Jetton allegedly said, "You should have said ‘green balloons,' " before leaving her home the next morning.

Point of query: Isn't the point of a safe word that it's easy to say? "Green balloons" is awfully cumbersome.

Luckily for Jetton (unluckily for humanity) he is not alone. Two other Jefferson City bigwigs recently faced charges for depraved sexual crimes during their tenures as leaders of the Show Me State (which, by the way, is going to need a new nickname if this doesn't let up)

    * Rep. T. Scott Muschany's extramarital affair was no biggie until his mistress' 14-year-old daughter said he came into her room completely naked and forced her to touch him. Luckily, a jury decided that the girl made up the touching part, and since "standing naked next to a 14-year-old girl in bed is not a crime," Muschany was found not guilty.

Hmmm....turns out it was a bit more than assault...more like rape.

We all got a kick out of the arrest of the Missouri GOP ex-pol for roughing up a sex partner because she forgot the safeword: "Green balloons." The police report is out, and it looks like a straight-up, horrific rape.

Rod Jetton, a 42-year-old Republican Missouri political consultant who formerly served as the speaker of the state's legislature, was charged with felony assault earlier this week for allegedly injuring a lady he was having S/M-style non-Republican sex with. The case was a little comical, because it appeared that the woman had consented to the encounter but had forgotten their agreed-upon safeword.

Now a Missouri blog has obtained the police report of the incident, and the account is much darker: The woman knew Jetton but hadn't seen him in several years, repeatedly rebuffed his advances, and seems to have been drugged. The incident was initially played by the Missouri press as an "S/M scandal," but the victim's account reads more like a brutal rape.

The victim told police that Jetton stopped over at her house one night for a visit carrying two bottles of wine:

SHE STATED WHEN SHE WAS FINISHED WITH THE FIRST GLASS, MR. JETTON IMMEDIATELY FILLED HER GLASS AGAIN IN THE KITCHEN OUT OF HER VIEW. [WOMAN] STATED SHE REMEMBERED THE FOOTBALL GAME ENDING ON THE TELEVISION AND THEY WERE STILL TALKING POLITICS. [WOMAN] STATED MR. JETTON HAD BEGUN TO TRY TO STICK HIS HAND UP HER SHIRT AND SHE PUSHED HIS HAND AWAY. SHE STATED SHE THOUGHT MR. JETTON WAS PLAYING AROUND.

[WOMAN] STATED SHE REMEMBERED PUTTING THE MOVIE "HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT" IN THE DVD PLAYER AT APPROXIMATELY 2300 HOURS. THEY BEGAN TO WATCH THE MOVIE AND MR. JETTON ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE HER PANTS AND SHE TOLD HIM "NO".

At that point, the woman appears to have blacked out, which may explain why the police report noted that Jetton refilled her glass out of her view. She told police that she woke up on the floor with Jetton on top of her, trying to tie her hands together with a belt. She tried to resist, but he started slapping her in the face and she blacked out again.

[WOMAN] STATED SHE CAME TO AND MR. JETTON HAD ONE OF HIS HANDS AROUND HER NECK CHOKING HER. [WOMAN] STATED SHE WAS UNABLE TO BREATH AT THIS POINT. SHE STATED SHE WAS STILL TO WEAK AND GROGGY TO RESIST MR. JETTON. SHE STATED AT THIS POINT, HER HANDS WERE RESTRAINED WITH AN OBJECT SHE ASSUMED TO BE THE BELT.

[WOMAN] STATED AS MR. JETTON CHOKED HER, SHE BLACKED OUT AGAIN. SHE THEN WOKE UP IN HER BED. SHE STATED MR. JETTON WAS HAVING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH HER. SHE STATED SHE COULD NOT GIVE ANY RESISTANCE DUE TO HER CONDITION. SHE STATED SHE WAS ON HER KNEES IN THE BED AND MR. JETTON WAS BEHIND HER PERFORMING THE SEXUAL ACT. SHE STATED MR. JETTON CONTINUOUSLY SLAPPED HER ON THE OUTSIDE OF HER LEFT LEG AND THE OUTSIDE OF HER RIGHT LEG AS HE HAD SEX WITH HER.

When she woke up the next morning, Jetton was still there. He leaned over her and said, "You should have said 'green balloons'" before kissing her goodbye. We can't figure out why he's only been charged with assault.Missouri GOP Pol's 'Green Balloons' Scandal Sounds Like Outright Rape - Rape - Gawker
