Default 9-12 taxpayer march on Washington

YouTube - Hundreds of Thousands to 2+ Million People Protest Big Government, Barack Obama in Washington D.C.

On the Monday after the 9-12 Taxpayer March on Washington, while the mainstream media tries to make sense of what happened at the event, the best coverage seems to be online. While the march was one of the largest demonstrations Washington has ever seen, some mainstream media reports underestimate the size of the crowds and don’t quite understand what was taking place. The best information is on the web, and most of it is not from the mainstream media.
For instance, several articles from the daily Internet publication American Thinker report on the size and scope of the march on Washington. Some have estimated that the crowd was as large as 2 million. One observer gave an estimate of 2.3 million. Regardless of the exact figure, no one is disputing the fact that the crowd was huge.

American Thinker writers are calling the 9-12 march “a transformative event.” Author Clarice Feldman wrote the following:
The feeling I have is that this is a wretched political class, as full of itself as it is idea-less and talentless and the people know it. They are disgusted enough with the new American elitism to travel on their own dime by any means available to come here to let Congress and the President know that they will use every legal means at their disposal to overthrow them. And overthrowing them is precisely what they intend to do.
James Simpson, in another American Thinker article, “America Spoke,” captured the essence of the marchers with his description of the crowd:
There were mothers, sons, fathers, daughters, newborn children and kids on the way up; there were many, many elderly and a lot of disabled folks, young and old, in wheelchairs. Many of these people had never been to a protest before in their lives. People were pleasant, polite and considerate. There was not a drunken eye in the house. The most unlikely bunch of domestic terrorists one could ever imagine.
Simpson went on to write that the march was not about liberalism or conservatism, but American values, “that is, the principles and guiding documents on which this country was founded.”

Mark Hemingway at National Review Online posted an article complete with his analysis and photos of marchers and some of their signs. He had an insightful comment about some of the immigrants who participated in the march:
Another interesting detail about the march — it was filled with immigrants. I'm pretty sure every Cuban in a thousand mile radius was there, helpfully explaining to everyone who would listen that Cuba's vaunted free health-care system involves shoddily trained doctors and bringing your own linen to the hospital.
While many in the mainstream media discounted the marchers and their causes, MSNBC had a least one piece that could be described as positive coverage of the event. As the old adage goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The aerial shot in this video shows Pennsylvania Avenue filled with people from one end to the other. This was a massive crowd.

CNS News reported that Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) thought the gathering represented a fundamental realignment of politics in America. DeMint made the following comment:
Anybody that doesn’t recognize this is mainstream America is going to miss the boat. I hope my party, the Republicans, realize that this is not a right-wing group. This is moms and dads and grandpas and grandmas. This is Democrats and independents. They just are alarmed at growth of government and debt and takeovers and the health care was just a tipping point.
Sen. DeMint raises a point worth considering: Were the politicians listening, or will they continue their bankrupting ways? If they ignore the recent march on Washington, there will be a new wave of unemployment late next year. It will be composed of members of Congress looking for new jobs.

Don't we already have a thread on this? Mods, please merge.

Were all the immigrants clear? They didn't seem to show up in any pictures.

Yes, I am absolutely sure that yet another brilliant politician from South Carolina is absolutely correct that this is the mainstream sentiment - that's surely why 10 months ago we elected President Obama and an overwhelming majority of democrats to the Senate and House. Yup, I'll lead the charge to kick South Carolina out of our great democratic nation since they keep electing the stupidest fucks ever born.

By the by Mr. DeMint, under what administration was TARP passed? Who administered the payments? And to whom? Under whose administration was the US attacked by terrorists? Which recent administration came into office with NO DEFICIT and left with the largest deficit on record (that didn't even include his war spending in the budget)? What President blatently and verifiably lied to the American public to start a war which has/had no discernible purpose and led to the death of thousands of American solidiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians? Who was that? I'm waiting...Ok, I'll give you a hint, it wasn't the current President you racist fuckwad.

Oddly enough, they were all white.

Yeah, that's the message I got from all of the signs and T-shirts. 'American values.'

9/12 March 'Tea Party' Photo: False Image Spread By Anti-Reform Activists

Tea Party protesters trying to tout the size of their march on Washington last weekend have been passing around a photo of a packed National Mall. But the picture is years old.

Politifact asked Pete Piringer, public affairs officer for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Department, if the rally was big enough to fill that space. Piringer said no -- and moreover, the picture can't be from 2009.

"It was an impressive crowd," he said. But after marching down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol the crowd "only filled the Capitol grounds, maybe up to Third Street," he said.

Yet the photo showed the crowd sprawling far beyond that to the Washington Monument, which is bordered by 15th and and 17th Streets.

There's another big problem with the photograph: it doesn't include the National Museum of the American Indian, a building located at the corner of Fourth St. and Independence Ave. that opened on Sept. 14, 2004. (Looking at the photograph, the building should be in the upper right hand corner of the National Mall, next to the Air and Space Museum.) That means the picture was taken before the museum opened exactly five years ago. So clearly the photo doesn't show the "tea party" crowd from the Sept. 12 protest.

"I've seen bigger crowds at Montreal Expos games, but I still wouldn't fake a photo just to justify your predictions of millions descending on Washington," said one gleeful Democratic media strategist. "This is grade-A stupid and just plays into the argument that these were astroturf protests to begin with. They've always brought the noise, but the question that was supposed to be answered this weekend was, could they bring the numbers? In that respect this was an unmitigated disaster."

The photo had been circulated on blogs and Twitter. A number of conservative blogs have since taken the photo down. Some have corrected their posts. Others say the circulation of the picture was a left-wing conspiracy to discredit the event. However, many of them are still claiming that at least a million people attended the march. Nate Silver estimates about 70,000 protesters showed up.

It isn't the first failed attempt by the protesters to inflate the size of the event. On Saturday, organizer Matt Kibbe announced on stage that ABC News had estimated a crowd of 1 to 1.5 million. ABC News had reported no such thing.

The teabaggers only lied about their size because of the liberal media calling them mean names.

That's funny because the DC Fire Department said it was 60-70k max. Besides the [awesome] evidence posted by Moongirl.

ETA- I also want to note that I 'love' JamieElizabeth's posting style. Drop in, post the most ridiculous right-wing wank, and then disappear. No discussion of the article. Niiice..... She must know that she can't possibly back up or defend this crap.

^ Yeah, the DC area barely noticed it happened. Except for those who have their TVs glued to Fox News.
