Thumbs up Southern Poverty Law Center says CNN should remove Lou Dobbs over Obama/birther crap

The SPLC, for anyone who isn't aware, is one of the nation's premiere organizations that tracks extremists such as white supremacists and the Klan. The fact that they're weighing in on this one is very interesting.

One thing that I was wondering about, before I read the letter (below), was the "so what?" factor. Meaning, yeah it's absurd to say that Obama wasn't really born in the states, but so what? We won the election, and anyone who is going to be believe Obama isn't legitimate isn't going to believe us any more if we get rid of Lou Dobbs. And in any case, isn't Lou Dobbs permitted to be a bit of an idiot at times (often)? Then I read SPLC's letter. Do read the excerpt below. I did not realize that the birther rumors, like many of the rumors Dobbs promotes, have their origins in the racist right. That is why SPLC is getting involved, and that is a disturbing trend for CNN's Dobbs.

An excerpt of SPLC's letter to CNN head Jonathan King:

As he has in several other instances, Mr. Dobbs, in taking up the birthers' claims, is adopting an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that originated on the radical racist right. As Gawker.com has reported, this particular conspiracy theory was first developed by an open anti-Semite and circulated by right-wing extremists who cannot accept the fact that a black man has been elected president of the United States. Among its adherents was neo-Nazi James von Brunn, the alleged murderer of a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., this June. Von Brunn had helped spread the birthers' claims on the Internet and attacked the "dishonest & conspiratorial Media" for not taking them up.

This is not the first time Mr. Dobbs has pushed racist conspiracy theories or defamatory falsehoods about immigrants. We wrote you in 2007 to bring to your attention his utterly false claim that 7,000 new cases of leprosy had appeared in the United States in a recent three-year period, due at least in part to immigrants. (The real number, according to official statistics, was about 400. Mr. Dobbs took his spurious information from the late right-wing extremist, Madeleine Cosman.) In addition, Mr. Dobbs has reported as fact the so-called Aztlan conspiracy, which claims that undocumented Mexican immigrants are part of a plot to "reconquer" the American Southwest. He has suggested there is something to a related conspiracy theory that claims the governments of Mexico, the United States and Canada are secretly planning to merge into the "North American Union." He has falsely claimed that "illegal aliens" fill one third of American prison and jail cells. And Mr. Dobbs has routinely disparaged, on CNN's air, those who have had the integrity to point out the falsity of these and similar claims.

Respectable news organizations should not employ reporters willing to peddle racist conspiracy theories and false propaganda. It's time for CNN to remove Mr. Dobbs from the airwaves.

Lou Dobbs is the worst kind of hippocrate. His children are half Mexican, his wife is an "anchor baby" and his in laws were immigrants from Mexico( couldn't find the source of them being illegal, but they are immigrants). Disgusting human being.

I was wondering why CNN didn't come down on Dobbs, or fire him, after he said that crap. It's one thing for the nutjobs(Fox News) to talk about it, but somebody on CNN makes it more mainstream.

That would be like a mainstream journalist saying that 'we don't know if Governor Palin actually gave birth to her fifth child.'

CNN Prez to Lou Dobbs: Drop Birther Story

    By Rachel Slajda - July 24, 2009, 3:42PM

CNN President Jon Klein wrote an email last night to "Lou Dobbs Tonight" staffers telling them the Obama birth certificate story is "dead," TVNewser reports.

"It seems this story is dead," Klein wrote, "because anyone who still is not convinced doesn't really have a legitimate beef."

He sent the email just before Lou Dobbs went on the air. He included information CNN's political researchers had gotten from the Hawaii Health Department -- information which "seems to definitively answer the question."

"Since the show's mission is for Lou to be the explainer and enlightener, he should be sure to cite this during your segment tonite," Klein wrote.

    This is what he sent:
*In 2001 - the state of Hawaii Health Department went paperless.*Paper documents were discarded*The official record of Obama's birth is now an official ELECTRONIC record Janice Okubo, spokeswoman for the Health Department told the Honolulu Star Bulletin, "At that time, all information for births from 1908 (on) was put into electronic files for consistent reporting," she said.
This is what Dobbs then said during his show:
The state of Hawaii says it can't release a paper copy of the president's original birth certificate because they say the state government discarded the original document when the health department records went electronic some eight years ago. That explanation, however, has not satisfied some critics.
He then continued with a segment about the birth certificate.

Dobbs, who's said he believes the president was born in the U.S., has nonetheless given airtime (and a measure of validity) to "birthers," people who question Obama's right to be president and argue that he's hiding his real birth certificate.

    Late Update
: In an interview today with Greg Sargent, Klein said CNN wouldn't take action against Dobbs if he continues pursuing the birther story, saying it's "his editorial decision to make."

When pressed about the fact that CNN has debunked the birthers' argument, Klein said, "We respect our viewers enough to present them the facts and let them make up their own minds."

I wish MSNBC had taken a similar stance in regards to Phil Donahue.

I haven't followed Dobbs till recently. Has he always been anti-immigrant or is this a post 9-11 change or something?

I used to watch Lou Dobbs but haven't actually seen him since he returned. He had a decent money show for a while.

Eh. Pat mouthing off will keep the GOP in the minority for years to come. He can continue his idiocy in public for all I care. The GOP will just gradually shrink and shrink as the US's demographics change. Less new voters for them!
