I am watching American Gangster right now. Stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crow and Josh Brolin. Pretty good.

    Attack the Block.

Fantastic! So much fun, and the young actors were all superb, especially John Boyega who plays the wonderfully charismatic Moses. Recommended!

Cabin in the Woods. I thought it was good, cheesey fun and Chris Hemsworth is hot as usual! Being a huge Joss Whedon fan I loved how many alumns he casted.

Juan of the Dead. The first Cuban zombie film ever. HIGHLY recommended!

The original "Alien". It came out when I was in high school, and I was blown away by the special effects and story line - as much as I was by "Star Wars". I loved Sigourney Weaver as Ripley.

It was on cable last night while the kids were finishing homework. I called my son upstairs, just in time for the scene where the alien attaches itself to John Hurt's face. I was telling him, "That's Olivander (from Harry Potter) 30 years ago!" Both of them were watching when the the alien starts to burst from Hurt's chest. My son was going "ew ew ew" as the alien came out. My daughter put her pillow over her eyes during the whole scene. Then, she walked out.

I put my son to bed just after Sigourney Weaver knocks Ash's block off. I love that film. Every single person in the film is a solid actor. Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Tom Skerrit, Harry Dean Stanton. Veronica Cartright. Ian Holm.

Alien is one of my top 25 films of all time (Star Wars is not.) I love that movie so much. It's minimalist, spare, which is what makes all the sci-fi so believable. Did you know that the scene of the alien exploding through John Hurt's chest was done in one take? The actors at the table had no idea what was to happen. The reactions to the explosion are genuine.

I think I read the one-stake story recently. Amazing. It seemed like it was groundbreaking in so many ways. Just the scene where they enter the chamber and find the alien pilot with a hole in its chest. With the sets influenced by HR Giger. I'd never seen anything like it before.

I also liked how the filmakers went to great pains to disguise the fact that they were filming in New Orleans, one of the more distinctive-looking cities in the US. I still immediately recognized several landmarks, streets, and highways.
My son and I went and watched this over the weekend (Friday morning, actually) and we laughed our asses off. We were 2 of the 3 people in the theater ... and the other guys laughed his ass off with us too! It was better than I thought it would be too. mostly because I typically loathe that fat shit Jonah whatever his name is... but I didn't want to kill him at the end of this one like I did with "The Sitter".

Finally saw Insidious. It's been two days and I'm still not sure what I think of it. Rose B and Patrick Wilson were fantastic. It was kitschy enough at times that it seemed deliberate but it was spread out enough that I'm not so sure. Weird though.

We have been watching the Castle tv series from Netflix. I really enjoy the all three of the detectives and Castle in this show.

Watched Marley on Friday! Excellent movie! There is so much I learned about his life that I never knew before. I've been a fan of his music since I was a kid and I remember watching Legend on Laser Disc whenever we were at our one friend's house who had it.

He did so much good in his short life that it really feels like an injustice was done to the human race. Of course I was crying like a baby during his funeral scenes but then felt uplifted when they showed scenes of his music being played all over the world. No matter where you're from, his message was clear.

We watched it On Demand but I'm seriously thinking of catching it in the theaters again. I highly recommend it.
