[quote=january;1088452]Dan in Real Life - I loved this movie. Really truly loved it. Maybe because of my hormones right now, but I really identified with Dan's character and the pervasive sense of loneliness and loss at the beginning of the movie. Being the loner in a group of happy couples. It just really touched me in many different ways, it made me laugh and it made me (almost) cry.[quote]

I loved it too. It was nice to see him take on a serious role. Very good film and he did a good job.

Volver - This is the first time I got Penelope Cruz's appeal, maybe it had to with watching the movie in Spanish. I did not care for her at all in English-language films, but I thought she looked beautiful in this movie.

Having your lead running around a CG environment, and having nothing coherent happening to her is NOT A STORY.
    1. I think it is very important for a VG film to recreate the VG's atmosphere. Resident Evil & Tomb Raider could have been really great if they'd sticked to the source material.

    2. Silent Hill did have a story. A very deep, introspective one at that, with many underlying themes, the most obvious one being, of course, religious fanaticism, but it wasn't the only one. I'm sorry if you didn't see the themes of the movie, you might have enjoyed it a lot more.

BTW, You preferred Fantastic Four to Rise Of The Silver Surfer? I guess our tastes are just not the same then... FF1 is the second-worst recent Marvel movie IMO, just after Ghost Rider. I thought FF2 was MUCH better.

My grading for Marvel Movies since 1998:

    1. Blade & The Punisher
    2. Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil, X2: X-Men United
    3. Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Blade II
    4. Blade: Trinity, Elektra, Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer
    5. Fantastic Four
    6. Ghost Rider

I haven't seen Nicky Fury and Man-Thing, and have left out the animated movies.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    My latest viewings:

-Astérix Aux Jeux Olympiques, at the cinema => I'm still unsure whether the 3rd live-action Astérix movie is the worst or the second-worst. On the one hand, it's never as bad as the 1st could be, but on the other hand, there were a few moments in the 1st one which shone amidst the badness, whereas this one retains the same level of mediocre throughout. People who complained about the hilarious 2nd one saying there wasn't enough Astérix & Obélix are sure to be pissed, because they have absolutely nothing to do here, and are basically side characters... For some reason the comic's plot is changed by adding a useless character played by an unknown dude who's in love with the princess of Greece, thus explaining the need to participate in the games. Said character thus becomes the lead in the story. Originally, the Gauls just hear about the games and wish to participate. Nothing about the film is incredibly bad, but none of it is remotely good either. So much could have been done with this movie: with the biggest budget in French history, one of France's best cinematographers, a great cast including the return of Alain Delon...but it's all badly handled, like the numerous cameos by famous athletes (Michael Schumacher, Tony Parker, Zinedine Zidane, Amélie Mauresmo) who are nearly all squashed at the end during a stupid ending sequence, instead of disseminated during the competition, which could have been fun. Anyway, a bad film, already a strong contender for unfunniest comedy of 2008...I can only hope that the unavoidable fourth one will have a better creative team behind it.

-Surf's Up, at home => A funny enough animated feature. I don't think there was any way it had a shot of winning the "Best Animated Feature" oscar though...The interesting thing here is that it's filmed like a documentary, parodying sports documentaries like Dogtown And Z-Boys, for example.

No, they would have been really great if they didn't have shit writing, hamfisted direction, and paperthin characters.

    2. Silent Hill did have a story. A very deep, introspective one at that, with many underlying themes, the most obvious one being, of course, religious fanaticism, but it wasn't the only one. I'm sorry if you didn't see the themes of the movie, you might have enjoyed it a lot more.
Oh that's bullshit. The religious "theme" was the ONLY one that was visible, and that was because it was practically the main focus. Tell me, what other themes were there? The loss of a child theme? Well that's kind of apparent when the main character LOSES HER KID and spends 2 hours running around a CG environment trying to find her.

The movie was empty, brainless and contentless. There was nothing there aside from pretty visuals, a cardboard lead and a charicature cop co-star that was beyond ridiculous. You know how to condemn a movie as truly bad? When you can't remember any of the characters' names. It is unmemorable, it is forgettable, it is devoid of impact.

It's interesting to note that the people who rate this highly all say the same thing ..."IT looks just like the videogame! Cool creature effects! Yay pyramid head! it was gory, cool!"

Not ONE bit of thought devoted to the story (or lack thereof), characterization, plot denouement (if any), acting, or anything else that actually makes a film. They're just concerned that it LOOKS like the stupid videogame, not if it presents an engaging story or is well done dramatically.

    EPIC FAIL.

BTW, You preferred Fantastic Four to Rise Of The Silver Surfer? I guess our tastes are just not the same then... FF1 is the second-worst recent Marvel movie IMO, just after Ghost Rider. I thought FF2 was MUCH better.
The second film felt clumsy. The direction wasn't as slick, the interacion between the characters seemed less well timed, and that whole wedding thing was just dorky. There was no real exploration of the human torch character, or the thing.. it was the stretchdude and invisible chick show. Also, Dr Doom comes back for no real reason other than to pad the script. Him stealing the surfer's board was nonsensical to the story, it had no point given that the earth was going to be destroyed.

Totally agree about Penelope. She was amazing in the film. I guess acting in her native language helped.

Last movie I saw was Bee Movie. It was awful. Had some good scenes in the beginning but then it got truly awful. I don't have a problem with children's movies but that was mostly unwatchable.

I get that. I loved her in "All About My Mother"

In American films, not so much

I like Penelope and Salma Heyak's relationship together. I don't remember where, but when someone was listing all the Oscar nominations she screamed YES! when Penelope's name came up. I thought that was so cute, lol.

3:10 to Yuma. Loved it but I'm a huge Russell Crowe fan anyway.

He should have been nominated for American Gangster!
