I never understand why the US has to remake perfectly good movies and TV shows from Europe. Sherlock is perfection. I won't want a US version.

I remember when the US tried to remake Coupling. Who thought that was a good idea? It was way too raunchy to be on network TV anyway, not to mention most of the charm came from the actors. The Brit version was perfect, the American version was crap.

Because its in "English" (not American), needs dumbing down (according to tv execs) and contains irony.

The Euro films etc? Well, they're not in American....

This times a million! I love the British version of coupling. Every ep in the first 3 seasons was perfect. I saw about 10 minute of the American version and knew it was awful.

BTW, I meant to saw I won't watch, not want.

Red Dwarf USA pilot 1992. Robert llewellyn moved to America briefly to join it. Check out the 6'1", "hunky" re-take of Lister (because they couldn't understand the humour of a loser/slob being the last surviving human). Prepare for Low Quality pain, sorry:

I have often wondered this too. I think they do it because of decency standards and syndication. They have a magic number that they have to reach to be able to syndicate a show. BBC focuses mainly on quality writing over quantity of shows. They also are allowed to say and do things on the BBC that we can't on American tv. I watched Sherlock and it awesome. I prefer the BBC versions over ours.

I don't think the US are good at remakes, the originals are usually the best. They're great at making original shows though.

    In general I agree.

On Sherlockiana though, the classic films with Rathbone were made in America, by an American film studio. Rathbone was English of course, and so was Nigel Bruce, but otherwise, those are definitely hollywood films. But then, that was a different time.

I have to admit to preferring Jeremy Brett to Rathbone but prefer Cumberbatch & Rupert Everett to the old ones. They subtler & I really liked the updating, for example Dr John Watson is back from Afganistan, 150 yrs after the first one....

Coupling was actually created and written by Steven Moffat, who also co-created and co-writes Sherlock (he's also the showrunner on Dr. Who). It was based on his relationship with his wife Sue Vertue (who co-produced both shows as well). That's why the main characters were named Steve and Sue. One of the reasons why Moffat and Vertue turned down selling the US rights to Sherlock is because the US version of Coupling was such a disaster.

Trivia: Sherlock was created by Moffat and his best friend, Mark Gatiss, a writer on Dr. Who, who are both huge Holmes geeks and started talking about a modern Sherlock on the train rides to the Dr. Who set in Wales. Gatiss also writes for Sherlock and plays Mycroft.

Gatiss is much, much more than "a writer on Dr Who".
