The best Christmas present ever! Jimmy Fallon sings duet with musical hero Paul McCartney... and hams it as 'wrapping rapper' with Justin Timberlake on SNL

It seems bosses at Saturday Night Live wanted to make it a very special Christmas for show alumni Jimmy Fallon.

For the chat show host got to sing a dream duet with his musical hero Sir Paul McCartney during his monologue as the show's guest host this weekend.

McCartney's surprise appearance came in the middle of what seemed to be a lame skit in which Fallon, 39, showcased his impersonation skills by singing a Christmas carol as himself, David Bowie, McCartney and Bob Dylan.

Living the dream: Host Jimmy Fallon got to sing with Sir Paul McCartney on Saturday Night Live this weekend

It started with a smartly dressed Fallon giving the adoring crowd a brief run through of his recent run of good luck.

He said: 'The past year was a great one for me. I had a little baby girl. But some other really cool news - starting February Im going to be the new host of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.'

With the plug out of the way he got down to business, explaining he was going to do what should have been a star-studded version of Joy To The World.

Jimmy said: 'Over the years I've been lucky enough to meet some of my musical idols so i asked them to be here tonight.

'I want to sing with three of my friends Mr David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Sir Paul McCartney.

Going solo: It seemed Jimmy was going to do a lame skit impersonating three of his musical idols

How spontaneous: Jimmy did his best to look shocked when Sir Paul walked out form the stage wings

At the double: Jimmy seemed to harmonise effortlessly with the Angela Lansbury lookalike

'Unfortunately they cant be here. Traffic is tough at this time and all of them are currently stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel.

'But I'm a professional, so the song must go on.'

But as he started a cringe-worthy impersonation of McCartney the real person walked out, drawing huge cheers.

Jimmy said: 'Paul I thought you were stuck in traffic?'

Leading the way: The host was like an old pro as they started their duet of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

High as a kite: Prankster Jimmy had the music legend's voice ran through a helium effect

McCartney replied: 'I was but then I took a city bike. Am I too late to sing a song?'

But when they started their duet of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas there was a helium effect in the Beatle's voice, though Fallon was quick to explain it was intended for Bob Dylan.

As they sang Jimmy was so pleased with their sound he said, 'Sounds good we should make an album.'

While McCartney brushed off the idea, the dynamic duo certainly seemed to have a great time as they got into the festive spirit.

Last laugh: Sir Paul was the one chuckling as Jimmy voice suddenly went high introducing the next part of the programme

But Fallon opened the show as part of his more famous pairing, as the sidekick to entertainer Justin Timberlake.

In a reprisal of a previous festive sketch, Timberlake was a Christmas wrapper rapper competing with Aidy Bryant, who preferred traditional carols.

This time though Fallon was drafted in as his partner, an equally festive, yet more environmentally friendly, gift bag.

In between rapping, Fallon explained: 'We are professional wrappers, we offer a wide range of services from traditional gift wrap which is tasteful to gift bags which are not wasteful.'

And when Bryant's patience with the pair finally ran out he told her not to start a 'wrap war.'

Deja vu: Justin Timberland reprised one of his most popular sketches when he played a wrapper rapper

Sidekick: But this time Jimmy played his wrap sack companion as they did their excruciating rhyming

He explained: 'We should all work together, we're all on the same team. I used to compete with doggy bag over here.

'But one day I needed a gift sack for a deck of playing cards I was giving my uncle.
'I had a deck that needed sacking.'

Fallon fired back: 'So I sacked his deck.'

But Bryant had the biggest laugh, saying: 'I've been divorced for seven years so I haven't sacked a deck for a long time.'

The pair also starred in a game show sketch, in which Timberlake played Fallon and Fallon played Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons.

Friendly rivallry: Justin explained the pair started as rivals until his future companion sacked his deck

Zinger: But Aidy Bryant's divorcee character got the biggest laugh when she said she had not sacked a deck in years

Ending on a high note: After working out their differences they burst into another rap performance

And while the latter won the general knowledge rounds, the former won the Family Fortunes style quiz when he delivered the top answer for 'how can a man be sexy.'

He answered: 'There's only one way for a man to be truly sexy - be Justin Timberlake.'
The pair also teamed up for another installment of their popular skit The Barry Gibb Talkshow, which had two special celebrity guests.

First up was Madonna, who took on the temperamental Jimmy Fallon's version of the Bee Gees legend when he threw a tantrum.

No contest: Jimmy Fallon's Jim Parsons had the upper hand on a Family Fortunes style game show

Back in the game: But Justin's Jimmy Fallon character was given the chance to steal the show after a fumble

Modest: And he ultimately won when he said the secret to a man being sexy is 'to be Justin Timberlake'

It started cordially when Barry asked her: 'You've travelled all over the world, you're an observer of human nature, Republican, Democrat, why can't people get along?'

She replied: 'In my experience politicians, it doesn't matter which country you come from, as long as they don't put their personal ideology above doing the right thing there will be unity. It's simple.'
But after impressing him she infuriated the star of the show by interrupting moments later.

The angry host said: 'You already answered the question woman. You think you can come on my show and say anything you want to me?'

Flogging a dead horse: The pair then resurrected their popular Barry Gibb Show sketch

Hero to zero: And after being impressed with Madonna he flew into a rage when she interrupted him

Tamed horse: But the Bee Gee eventually gave in after the ageing popstrel argued back to him

The real deal: Barry Gibb made a shock appearance alongside the duo and showcased his legendary falsetto

And after a bit of verbal tennis, he ultimately conceded, 'She's tamed me like a wild horse.'
The show then closed with a singsong featuring the real Barry, who showed the pair how it should be done with his trademark falsetto.

But there was still time for Timberlake to entertain the crowd with a couple of tunes of his own, the first a pumping dance number with a laser drenched stage set and the second a soft ballad.

It certainly seems Drake, who will be hosting on January 18, has a hard act to follow.

The three Goodmen: John was joined by Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro in a toe-curling nativity sketch

Let's dance: Justin lived up to his musical guest billing when he starred with an upbeat rocky number

Feeling Drizzy? Drake will be quaking in his boots as he has to follow on Justin's footsteps on January 18

Good night: Justin was seen leaving the afterparty for the show after celebrating his successful appearance

Time to celebrate! Macca was also seen arriving for the afterparty

That whole episode was great! I almost fell out of my chair when Barry Gibb showed up!! The "Waking Up with Kimye" sketch was great, too!

Justin Timberlake always does awesome on SNL. I never miss an episode when I know he's going to be on.

I thought this was hilarious...(referring to Paul McCartney)

Yep, JT is always good on SNL. The celebrity family feud skit was great. Fallon did a great Jim Parsons.

Madonna is such a twat. If you watch her during the Gibb skit, while everything else is going on (not just her part in the skit) you can see how awkward she is. She's been in the entertainment industry for what... 60 years?... and she still doesn't look comfortable in front of an audience or camera and can't act to save her life.

And why was she sitting with her legs apart? Did anyone else notice that?

And WHERE is Beck Bennet? I haven't seen him in a sketch since September.
