There was an original? I was meaning the Jim Carrey version. Usually I like his movies, even if they are pretty stupid, but this one was just awful. My husband and I actually turned it off b/c it was so bad.

i walked out on Babel when it was on cinema - its a heap of shit. i just didn't get it - Cate Blanchett should have ran away from that "film".
Alicia Silverstone: "I think that the film Clueless was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it's true lightness."

I can't wrap my brain around anyone not liking American Beauty...

I agree. They weren't that great and they all seemed to have interchangeable plots and characters.

    American Beauty:

"Look at me! We're trying really hard to be artistic and deep! Do you notice? Please notice! We want an oscar for this! I know it isn't REAL depth, but it's got enough of a veneer to seem like it! Please buy it!"

    Lost In Translation:

    "Just watch."

    That's the difference.

I didn't like American Beauty. Parts of it were mildly entertaining but for the most part it was pretentious to the point of confusion.

I liked some of it... but I just felt it was trying too hard overall. That doesn't take away from th performances in the film, which were very good. It's the way the material was presented.
