I also recently saw The Rite, which wasn't great, but interesting.

You guys are awesome! I'm definitely going to check these out. I've seen some, but most are new to me. The Omen is one of my favourites, that movie creeps me out. The kid playing Damien, the nanny at the party, and that MUSIC... *shudder*. The Haunting is fantastic too, the doors breathing scared the hell out of me. I really loved Blair Witch as well.

Oh yes! I was on the edge of my seat, it was really frightening and well-done. Very sad, too.

    Burnt Offerings

    The Sentinel

I second The Descent. Awesome movie!

I'm surprised no one mentioned The Ring. That movie scared the freakin' crap out of me the first time I saw it!

The Amityville Horror. I prefer the original, but the remake isn't too horrible. I love it when our movie channel plays the two of them back-to-back. For anyone who still lives under a rock and missed the newsflash: It is NOT a true story!

The Haunting in Connecticut. There's a bit of blood, but not much.

I was coming here to recommend this movie. It's a great movie. It's by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth...which is another creepy one). it's very sad.

I also agree with the suggestions for Blair Witch Project, The Others and I enjoyed The Ring. The Shining has some violence but it's not like Saw or anything, plus it's so well done. What was considered gory in old horror movies is probably laughable today. The first Halloween is great (Jamie Lee Curtis).

There are great recommendations in this thread. I would also suggest a couple of old classic horrors which are worth a watch and have no gore but are quite creepy - Night of the Demon/ Curse of the Demon (with Dana Andrews) and the original Cat People. Another good one to watch, although sci-fi, has elements of horror is Forbidden Planet.

Cool thread. Some more good older ones:

    Saboteur
    Shadow of a Doubt
    Gaslight
    The Uninvited (1944 version)
    The Spiral Staircase
    Sorry, Wrong Number

Please watch Rebecca by Alfred Hitchcock. The lead actress in it is excellent. It's based on the novel by Daphne DuMurier and also stars Laurence Olivier.

Very much edge of your seat stuff. I love Hitchcock - oh and see Strangers on a Train. Classic stuff.

Another good one is Leave Her to Heaven - it's another oldie with a good performance by Gene Tierney.

The Descent scared the crap out of me, but there's still some pretty intense death scenes in it.

The Strangers set me on edge a little bit and I would probably say it's in the realm of The Descent. There's still some blood and murdering but it's not like Saw or some crap like that.
All you can do at life is play along and hope that sometimes you get it right.

I also love horror films .... I would suggest:
    Rosemary's Baby
    Carnival of Souls (1962)
    Diabolique (1955)
The Shining... no gore but some blood.
    The Mothman Prophecies
    Rose Red (TV Series)
    Lars Von Trier's The Hospital
    The Cat and the Canary(Silent)

The original Halloween (starring Jamie Lee Curtis)

Paranormal Activity (not gory but I also didn't find it particularly scary or enjoyable)

    The Bad Seed
