Debbie Reynolds played the part of Liberace's Mother. I didn't freaking recognise her!

I didn't either, had to read the credits to see who played the mother. I also didn't recognize Dan Ackroyd until that last 1/2 hour of the movie.

I really liked it. Everyone's performances were great and it wasn't as much of a campfest as I was expecting.

A good dose of Liberace on Oprah. Oprah is much more annoying than Lib.

Does anyone else think that painting on the first page looks like John Travolta with big hair, or am I the only one?

I don't really see Travolta..but I did learn from the movie he wore a full on wig.

    Me neither! Amazing.

Kudos to Rob Lowe. He must have had a ball playing such an oddball.

Superb performances by Michael and Matt. Yes, Michael WAS Liberace. Very interesting, dark and entertaining. Costumes and sets were flawless.

Oh, one more kudo to Scott Bakula. He was great and I've never paid any attention to him. He looked like a 1970's Glenn Frey (The Eagles). The casting director did a great job.

    (Liberace did poppers?)

Oh yes Bakula was great! I wish he would have had more screen time.

ok after DVR'ing this I finally got to watch the entire thing. let me preface this by saying i loved Liberace.

i could not get past Michael Douglas as Liberace. He never really sold me on his portrayal. And his voice as Liberace was grating.

the worst person in the movie? Rob Lowe by far. So cheesy.

i did love the scenery, the house, the cars. But Michael Douglas as Liberace? not thrilled at all.

ETA i thought Matt Damon did a great job. And Scott Bakula was terrific.

I watched it, I was a little thrown off by Matt Damon's real life age, since Scott Thorsen was only 17 when he met Liberace but he aged in the part and did a great job. Everyone was talking about Michael Douglas, who was perfect but Damon did really well too. He's so sweet and naive in the beginning, only to become this sad, desperate drug addict, clinging to Liberace and the fame.

Michael Douglas was fantastic, he had the nasal voice of Liberace down perfectly and all his gestures, it even looked like he was actually playing the piano!

Liberace wasn't a very nice guy in this, he loved Scott, wanted to adopt him, he made Scott's face over to look like Liberace and then discarded him for a younger model. I guess though, except for the face work and adoption it could be like any other Hollywood marriage!

In the end, when Liberace's dying from Aids, he reconciles with Scott but still tries to hide that he was gay. The death certificate states that he died from heart failure (from a watermelon diet?!?!) but the state actually changes it to Aids after blood and tissue samples tell a different story. That's the only time I felt bad for him, after he was dead and everyone knew what he tried to hide his whole life.

I felt for Scott though, I wanted him to have a happy ending somehow but apparently it didn't work out that way for him. Poor guy.
Just watched it on demand. 17? ...I didn't realize that. I agree, Liberace was not a nice man in this movie, just churning out the young boys, then throwing them away. (I do realize this is based on Scott's book though...)

Hard to believe that Liberace denied his gayness, and people actually bought it??? Wow, things have sure changed.

And what the heck did they do to Rob Lowe's face/eyes?

Found this, posted today on TMZ...

    LIBERACE'S EX-LOVER
    Bailed Out of Jail ...
    By Bunny Ranch Owner

    EXCLUSIVE
Scott Thorson -- Liberace's former lover who was just portrayed by Matt Damon -- has been bailed out of jail by Dennis Hof, the owner of the Bunny Ranch brothel ... TMZ has learned.

Thorson's life with Liberace is the subject of HBO's "Behind the Candelabra" -- but not covered in the movie is the fact Thorson has been sitting behind bars in Reno since February 22 ... waiting to be sentenced on burglary and identity theft charges.

Thorson pled guilty last month after getting busted for using stolen credit cards. Attorney David Huston is representing him at sentencing in July.

Hoff tells TMZ he decided to help because he felt Thorson -- who has stage II colon cancer -- was not getting proper treatment in jail.

Hoff says he will put Thorson up at the Bunny Ranch until his sentencing, and make sure he receives his treatments. For cancer ... not the typical ranch treatments.

I watched this last week and I really enjoyed it. I knew practically nothing of Liberace except that he played the piano and dies of AIDS. I thought everyone did a really good job and now after going back through old videos of Liberace, I think Michael did exceptionally well. The whole tim I was mesmerized by him. I loved Rob Lowe's character too!

Loved it! Watched it once with Mr P and then watched it again a few days later on my own. Hell, I have tomorrow off of work, finally, and may watch it again. I get nostalgic about living in Vegas in the past, so this will definitely go into my go to Vegas movies. One can only watch Casino and Showgirls so many times!

Actually, Scott was on with Howard Stern yesterday and he does seem to be doing ok for himself. He's got a second book deal signed. He does have anal cancer. He also talked about being with Michael Jackson for 6 years - as a lover. He also said he was 16 when Liberace first began a relationship with him - said there was a 48 year age difference. He said Liberace had had silicone injections in his penis and that his penis was hideous and lumpy and disgusting! He says he has a 8.5 - 9 inch cock and that Liberace loved it and said "Too much of a good thing is .... WONDERFUL". This guy didn't really hold back anything.

ETA - damn it took me almost 5 years to get to 100 posts?
yes, he wound up in the witness protection program over the Wonderland murders. He really sounded and seemed like a positive person yesterday on Stern.

Yes, Scott is staying at the Bunny Ranch - there even seems to be talk about a reality show. Liberace sued a magazine and won because of statements about him being gay - apparently, after that, people were just afraid to mention it. Nobody bought it. OH, that was another thing Scott was saying ... Scott, Lee (as Boober referred to Liberace) and Michael Jackson all had plastic surgery together and then convalesced at Liberace's home. Scott also said that he had never touched drugs until Liberace thought he was putting on too much weight and had him put on the "Hollywood Diet"...
