yup. Like what did Pete think, she was going to leave her husband and her and Pete were going to run away together.

Didn't see Megan quitting. curious how Don will deal with that. I still love the interaction between Don and Peggy, telling Don to shut up. Only she can get away with that. Can you imagine if Pete ever said that to him? Reminds me of the relationship I used to have with my old boss.

Just got back into S5 - missed S4 completely - and nothing much has really changed. I'd still do Roger WAY more than Don. Peggy's an odd fish isn't she? SHe pings my gaydar 100%

I can't stop thinking about the elevator incident. Don pushes a button, goes to get in and realizes the car is several floors down. He could have died!

AND THEN HE TELLS NO ONE. And he doesn't actually leave the floor, he just goes back to his office. Where was he going originally and why didn't he go?

I'm not sure what to make of this surreal incident.

I read somewhere that the elevator bit may symbolize Megan getting away from him and he can't follow.

I was thrilled they played "Tomorrow Never Knows". Never heard it on screen before, it's awesome. Though it really seemed to show just what generation Don is from for the first time, compared to the young'ins running around. Oh hell, even Roger could legitimately listen to it now after he got his acid on.

I felt like the elevator incident was an omen of his downfall. To me, the episode was about women gaining power. Pete complained about women being the ones who decide the direction of relationships and can't control the woman he had sex with. Peggy told Don to shut up (unthinkable until now) and she has taken to barking orders. Megan, a woman, is the talented golden child in the office. They even gave us a little reminder of how powerful and competent Joan is; she was the calm decision maker re: Megan while Don floundered in his emotions. Don told Roger he discussed having a baby with Megan and SHE said no. Don's presentation to cool whip bombed without the right woman.

Megan made the elevator and the men on it wait for her while she kissed Don. He tried to take the same path and we saw what happened. Maybe it symbolizes that Megan will be his downfall or women will be his downfall or just that his downfall is treacherously near, if he's not careful.

Thanks Lobelia, you theory makes sense to me. Expanding on it a little, I think it was symbolic of Don feeling like he's flying without a net, that the floor is falling out from under him, etc. With all of the women around him coming into their powers, he doesn't know how to deal. His world no longer makes sense to him.

[he could do with an acid trip, imo]

I was beginning to worry that the incident was foreshadowing another office tragedy, albeit a more deadly one than the last.

They should just hire Megan to do the Cool Whip commercial. Actually, I'm sure they will because it would give Don an excuse to have her around. With that on her resume, she's sure to be an instant success like she was at the agency. She's 'one of those girls' after all. Then Don will really have something to be angsty about.

I'm still unnerved by the way he didn't tell anybody about the elevator. If somebody dies because of it.... ?

That's exactly why I found the whole thing so surreal. Don isn't an impractical idiot--why wouldn't he TELL someone that the elevator appeared to be malfunctioning?! He just turned around and forgot about wherever he was going to begin with, and never mentioned it at all! Megan's new-found independence doesn't have him that gobsmacked, does it?

The incident may have served a symbolic purpose, but surely there has to be a practical narrative purpose as well.

SOMEBODY'S gonna fall down there, I bet. Pete certainly seems like he's on a path of self-destruction but he's too important a character... or is he? It would be interesting if it were Megan - lots of directions to take Don with that. Think of the guilt he would feel, for one thing. Or SHOULD feel.

i wish they would stop focusing so much on Megan and show Betty, Sally and Joan more. Bring back Sal! something. I am not pleased with the weaker Don Draper. I want the old Don back!

msdeb, I like Megan but I agree they're focusing too much on her. She's been in every episode, which is logical since she's married to the lead, but come on! Send her off on a trip so we can get some damn Betty.

On bringing back Sal, I thought of him when the gay client came on to Don and Don just smiled it off. I always though Don acted like a complete Dick to Sal. LOL.
