Im very ambivalent about the movie itself.. as it seems a majority of the moviegoing public is. There's no way universal is going to make its money back.. they might break even, but Kong was a colossal waste of mony.

Having just returned from the late show, I can honestly recommend the
    film, but with some reservations:

    1. It is uneven in parts -- there are scenes that are just tedious.
It got off to a really rough start when I learned that the leading
man is a film director who's sailing to the South Seas to finish his
film...as if making a film is the only exercise worth making movies about.

    2. There was no dialogue between Naomi Watts and Kong, and
because of this, they had to communicate through facial expressions,
and she's just not that expressive -- she made the same moony-eyed
face at Kong throughout their scenes together.

    3. There are action scenes on Skull Island where Naomi, at the
very least, would have broken her neck, but she miraculously
    survives. SPOILER:
During those major scenes where Kong fights three dinosaurs
at once, he holds her in his hand even though he is flailing around
madly and even elbowing the dinosaurs. It's only the skill on
Peter Jackson's part that convinces us that she survived,
having been tossed about like a rag doll
    . Spoiler is over.

    4. If the writer falls in love with her, they really need more time
together on the boat, before they get to the island. Naomi is
pretty but she's no Catherine Deneuve; frankly, I had my doubts
whether Adrien Brody would have risked his life to save her.

There, now, having said that, Peter Jackson does a really good job on
Skull Island. Once the ship arrives there, it's well-paced and the
characters take on a new level of plausibility.

The special effects are put to great use -- there were several
"holy shit!" moments in this movie before they even get to Kong.
(I haven't seen the original since I was eight or so...)

Jack Black is good as a slick director who is part con artist, but he
struggles with the megalomania a bit.

So, well worth it...just over three hours long, but it's worth going
    to see.

i went and saw it and liked it very very much. i also had to hold back tears when they caught him and esp. while they were shooting at him ontop of the empire state building. the whole realtionship between kong and naomi kinda weirded me out in a 'ewww beastiality' kinda way. and the natives on Skull Island creeped me the FUCK out! they were dirty and scary.

Didn't Peter Jackson actually go over the studio's buget, and had to finish up the movie on his own wallet?

We shouldn't believe anything the studios tell us about their budgets.
If you order the Quentin Tarantino film course, you'll know why.
The numbers that they tell the press about budgets are bullsh!t--
utterly pulled out of their asses for the purposes of negotiating
a real profit, with the added side effect of making the movie
business seem forever out of your reach.

You should read Michael Jay Epstein on slate.com. He writes about
the new economics of making movies, and he exposes some dirty
little secrets about how the money men think -- including
the German Tax Shelters that studios have been using for
    years.

    FOLLOW-UP QUOTE:

There was a rumor going around that the LOTR was one of the
hugest financial gambles in movie history. This quote,
from someone with connections inside, disproves it:

New Line Cinema, for example, covered almost the entire cost of its Lord of the Rings trilogy by combining German tax shelters with New Zealand subsidies and preselling the film in a few foreign markets.
And you can bet those films didn't cost anywhere near the
hundreds of millions that the producers say they do. Tomb Raider,
which allegedly had a budget of $94 million, really only cost $7 million
to make; that figure of $94 million is pure bullshit.

Saw it tonight.. ugh, was never so bored in my life. Someone needs to take Peter Jacksons money away from him and replace it with an editor. Talk about overblown directorial overindulgence..

Too bad he couldn't have cut the equivalent from his bloated film.

    Saw the film tonight--it's great!

The sweeping cinematic vision and how Skull Island was filmed was amazing. Not to mention how the dinosaurs and T-Rex's were brought that to life in front of your eyes. Lots of action, yet was able to low-rev itself to hyponotizing and tender moments. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, from start to finish, hands down.

I noticed Naomi Watts didn't scream as much as the other Kong movies, however, all that high-octave screeching would have been irritating, so this was fine.

BTW: Great casting with Jack Black as the seedy, money-hungry director/producer. Adrian Brody and Naomi Watts well-casted as well. You can tell that this is the same director as Lord of the Rings (now I want to rent the trilogy!).

^That's the one thing I hate about the original. Fay Wray never stops screaming pretty much from the time you see Kong for the first time. It's painful.

Still have to see the remake though, I'll get around to it.

Im just surprised that through al lthe falling, being tossed around, and being whipped back and forth ol Naomi didn't get a broken neck or knocked out from G forces.

Saw it over the weekend and it was okay. It was way to long. The first hour and a half were boring. I had to keep my 6 year old awake before the action started. Once Kong comes into the picture it was better. And yes I now it's just a movie but I felt bad for Kong. What do people think will happen when you take a monster sized ape away from the only home he's ever known. He should have smashed a few more buildings and stupid people along his walk if you ask me. But I'm also someone who felt bad for Godzilla when he was killed. I was about 7 when I saw it but I still knew deep down it wasn't Godzilla's fault. He was misunderstood people!!!!!!!!!!!!!
