Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the overdone CGI

Previously I stated that there would be instances in the previous Indiana Jones series where they may have used CGI to enhance the visuals. In particular, some of the backdrops back then used matte sort of painting. Or the scenes with the crocodiles in the river in Temple of Doom, those were animated crudely. And so on and so forth. But the meat and potatoes always has been thrilling stunts in real time. They just totally overdid it here, like 80 percent of the chase sequence in the forest seemed CGI. And the man eating ants and all that other stuff, looks like it's straight out of 'how to make CGI movies' central, to show it for the sake of showing CGI effects. Totally 'un-Indy.'

    Yes, exactly.

CGi should be there to do 2 things:

    1) Create things that cannot be created otherwise, ie: giant robots

    2) slightly enhance physical effects so they don't look fake.

Directors are using CGI to basically create impossible physical effects in a natural environment without any explanation for the superhuman abilities demonstrated, which leads to disbelief and being popped out of the movie.

There were definitely some very George Lucas like quotes - why is he allowed to write a script? The Tarzan scene just annoyed me. Did the monkeys like Shai because he has the same hairstyle, thus they knew to attack Cate Blanchett?

I hated Temple of Doom, Kate Capshaw sucked.

Now your starting to ruin it for me. I hated the groundhogs too... I feel the after glow fading. OK it was a OK movie but I liked the trailers and I stand fast by that decision!!!!

Ya as soon as I saw that groundhog, I started to groan....but nothing as bad as the monkeys and shia. That was, o.k., no f**king comment.

I liked it, but I have to admit that inwardly I was all OMFG and eye-rolling at the swinging with the monkeys in the jungle sequence. I was embarrassed for the people who decided it would be a good idea, and felt sorry for the people who had to execute it.

I thought the groundhogs were cute!

The ants reminded me of the movie Antz.

see, that's what happens when directors have kids and get old. They get all mellow and cutesy and shit.

Another thing is, it's like I've seen this all before.

Elaborate set pieces? Check. CGI creatures (ants, monkeys)? Check. Etc. Etc.

I think action movies have reached their limit of what they can show, pretty much everything has been done so things are repeating itself over and over. Look at Hulk and those other CGI fests, same old same old, people battling in the city so sections of buildings can be destroyed, cars/buses flip over and crush people, panicking civilians, police/military, etc.

I couldn't shake the feeling that I've seen everything in Indy 4 in other movies.

They ripped off a good half a dozen movies too.

    The ants scene....The Mummy

Swinging from the trees...Tarzan (of course) and George of the Jungle

The alien head....Alien and a whole lot of ET

    The stupid groundhog....Caddy Shack

    etc etc...

I think it felt like Close Encounters meets National Treasure...with the groundhog from Caddyshack...the ants from The Mummy. Nothing really felt original. Whats sad is that this movie was on the table for so long because they were waiting for a "fantastic script" - well ironically the script was what failed them, I think.

And whoever said this movie should be separate from the trilogy is 100% correct.
