Admittedly I didn't see the show so perhaps I shouldn't comment or ask questions. I do think Jodi is somewhat odd by nature and she is not a histrionic, actress-y, fame-whore, so maybe she's always felt a bit a bit like the odd woman out. Maybe she projects that feeling of being an oddball onto the way that other people look at her. But really, there are tons of well-respected and beloved actors who have been in the business for awhile who manage to have both a public and private face and give out to the public only what they choose.

Per one of the comments above--who gives a shit about the lesbian thing? Even before she semi came out a few years ago, I don't think people were exactly beating down her door to try to catch her being gay. It's not anything like the level of interest people have in knowing if, say, Tom Cruise and John Travolta are gay. I think people have moved on past that a long time ago. Who even cares about her personal life? I think she's done a damn good job of keeping her personal life private, so I'm not sure what she's worried about.

I wonder about the timing of her getting a lifetime achievement award now, though. I wonder what prompted it.

I remember a lot of people murmuring about whether she was gay or not, probably sometime in the 90s, maybe before that for all I know. It may not have been their business, and she didn't owe them an explanation one way or the other, but it was a popular topic of conversation for a while.

Foster lost me when I saw that she'd brought Mel Gibson as her escort to sit front row center with her and thanked him profousely in her speech. "You saved me, too"? Gag. She's welcome to be friends and defend whomever she pleases, but I'm going to give her the side eye for it. I don't agree with all my friend's opinions, but when it's huge shit like being an anti-semite . . . I mean how do you reconcile that in your friendship? None of that detracts from her talent, of course, but I viewed her whole speech through the lens of knowing that she was canoodling with Mel Gibson.

i think there's something to be said for having the guts to stand up for someone and not be ashamed to still be their friend, even after they've been made a pariah by everyone else around you. i felt the same way about kate moss having galliano design her wedding dress after he'd had his drunken meltdown and had been arrested.
no one ever gave sinatra shit for being close friends with a bunch of mafiosos with lots of blood on their hands.
trudeau was friends with castro. as was hemingway.

^ I get what you're saying, but there are just some things I don't see reconciling enough to support. I mean if someone flips their wig a bit and goes off the rails, it's one thing and they're going through a bad time and will hopefully get some help. If someone has really deep-rooted hatred towards and anger towards a whole group of people or if they violate others in some way, I don't see what there is much to defend in the friendship. I know a few people who get vicious about homosexuals and have really offensive, nasty opinions on the topic. After something like that comes out, I just can't with them anymore, because it means they loathe my best friend because of who he loves.

I can see your point, sputnik. She has been fiercely loyal to Gibson (as has RDJr.), and I guess that's her business, but I still question whether proclaiming it during an awards speech was the best choice. Who knows, maybe she's mad about him being judged for his private life, as she seems to perceive herself.

The thing is, as others have mentioned, I've always thought she was one of the few celebrities whose privacy has always been respected, because she guarded it so carefully and I thought that had more to do with the whole John Hinckley thing than it had to do with her orientation, and of course protecting her kids. Honestly, it seemed to me that the LGBT community cared more about her coming out than any straight people did. (Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this; I am partly basing it on the cover that OUT magazine did a few years back with her and Anderson Cooper...)

what i meant was that, before his drunken, public outburst and arrest, mel gibson was already mel gibson - creepy catholic, sexist, bigoted pig. and all of hollywood, jews included, was sucking his dick. then it goes public and suddenly he's persona non grata and everyone suddenly developed a conscience and didn't want to be seen with him. except for a few people with balls, like jodie foster and rdj. like i said, not defending mel's actions (although i will forever be grateful for giving us 'sugartits'), just pointing out that he didn't become a different person after the sugartits incident, the only difference is it was made public. so that's why i respect the people who publicly stood by him even when it was an unpopular thing to do.

I thought Jodie's speech was great-it was such a real moment.

    I can't believe she's 50 already, she looks great.

Btw, did anyone notice her and RDJ whispering to each other and giggling when Clinton was on stage. I'd love to know what they were joking about.
