Nobody talks about it in the books. The generally accepted story is that before Robert's Rebellion, Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark who was betrothed to Robert Baratheon, and she didn't survive.

Ned has a fever dream when he's in the black cells about a battle at a place called the Tower of Joy between Ned and a bunch of Northmen with three of Aerys' Kingsguard including Ser Arthur Dayne, who gets talked about a lot in the show as the greatest knight ever. By this time Rhaegar is already dead, killed by Robert Baratheon at the Battle of the Trident. The war is over and Robert is the new King. The three Kingsguard were loyal to Rhaegar, and Arthur is his best friend. In the dream they say they swore a vow and are ready to die to keep it.

In the dream they fight and it was seven against three and only two stood at the end (Ned and Howland Reed, who is Meera and Jojen's dad). Howland saved Ned's life somehow while Ned was fighting Arthur Dayne. Ned then finds Lyanna in "a bed of blood" clutching blue roses (the crown Rhaegar Targaryen gave her at the tournament when he shunned his wife and crowned Lyanna "Queen of Love and Beauty", which started the whole series of events leading to Robert's Rebellion.) She begs him to promise her something, then dies. He buries the fallen Kingsguards, tears down the tower and takes Arthur Dayne's ancestral sword Dawn back to the Daynes' castle at Starfall.

When Ned finally returns to his new bride Catelyn back at Winterfell he brings an infant, Jon Snow, and tells Catelyn never to ask about his mother. The rumour starts that it's the nursemaid, Wylla, who works for the Daynes at Starfall, but Catelyn suspects it might be Ashara Dayne, Arthur's sister, who threw herself from a tower. Nobody seems to think about Lyanna.

So it's accepted by a large majority of the readers that Lyanna gave birth to Jon Snow, who was being protected by the three Kingsguard because he is the rightful heir. Rhaegar was big on prophecy and was convinced he needed three children to be the three heads of the dragon. His wife Elia Martell almost died giving birth to her son, and was too frail to have any more children. So Rhaegar may have been trying to fulfil the prophecy, or maybe he fell in love with Lyanna who was a wild beauty, but Jon is presumed to be their son, and the subject of the series A Song of Ice and Fire (Ice = Stark, Fire = Targaryen).

faithanne-was the Bolton storyline like that in the book? I can't remember for the life of me. Like I was completely unsurprised by what happened, but now I'm doubting myself that it's because it was in the books and is more that I'm just unsurprised by how horrible Ramsay is.

That said, I'm just so happy Arya's storyline is being used this season because it's one of my favorites in the book and I was sad that it never appeared last season. And damn, taking that year off for Bran was a really bad idea. Puberty hit him like a brick wall.

Theon disappeared for three books, but since D&D love their torture porn his suffering at the hands of Ramsay simply had to be shown. Wasn't Theon the only POV character around to see the Bolton's fucked up family dynamics in action?

    @noday:

No, Roose is still alive and well, living at Winterfell with Fat Walda and Ramsay. Only Ramsay isn't married to Sansa, but to the fake Arya the Lannisters sent up from Kings Landing who is actually Sansa's childhood friend Jeyne Poole. Jeyne is the one being abused by Ramsay who eventually jumps off the wall with Theon. They are on the run and in the Winds of Winter preview chapters SPOILERS AHEAD Theon is being held prisoner by Stannis and Jeyne Poole is on her way to Castle Black. The big battle hasn't happened yet and Stannis has the northern army camped near Winterfell. Shireen and Selyse are still alive, as is Mance Rayder who was sent by Jon Snow to infiltrate Winterfell with a bunch of wilding women, and they help Jeyne and Theon escape. Nobody but Theon knows she's not Arya, and Jon Snow is murdered partly because he wants to ride to Winterfell to rescue his sister, but the Nights Watch aren't supposed to get involved in outside wars so some of the men turn on him.

Thanks, guess I was just unsurprised by how far Ramsay could take things. And yeah, I'm still kind of annoyed that they just merged the Jeyne Poole story with Sansa. It just seemed so unnecessary to torture one character that much between both of her "love interests".

^Although Book Sansa has been enduring a different kind of torture over at the Eyrie with little Robin Arryn. I feel so sorry for her, describing how he insists on sleeping in her bed then wets it, tries to unlace her dresses and breastfeed and wants to spend the day in bed kissing. He's such a gross little boy. So I guess it's a choice between being raped by Ramsey or pissed on by Sweetrobin. I'd choose the weak-bladdered 10 year old any day, but still, the poor girl has had a rough time of it.

Lysa really did a number on that kid and if you think about it, she's responsible for a big part of the mess that happened. Jon Arryn's death is why Ned went to KL to begin with.

These are not the Umbers I remember from the books, show!Umbers can fuck off and die. Tower of Joy was cool and I can understand why they are not showing the whole thing at once. Jon's mike drop was pretty awesome. Jaime remains a moronic character.

I'm tired of direwolfs dying and Starks dying(I don't see this ending well for Rickon).

There were a lot of awesome moments in this episode but I yelled loudest at poor Shaggy. That wasn't awesome.

I think the Umber character might be based on Mors Crowfood, who IIRC was the Greatjon's rogue uncle. I'm sure one of the Umbers went over to the Boltons and was at Wintefell during Theon's ADWD chapters.

I'm really hating what they're doing to Jaime more and more each episode. WTF? He's Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and he's fine with putting Qyburn's undead science project on permanent duty as Cersei's personal head smasher. It's too ridiculous so there had better be a good reason for it.

Where are my dragons? WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS? I want dragons.

Suck it Olly! Stabby little bitch.

eta Just checked my WOIAF app (shut up) and I'm getting the Umbers confused but the older ones are pretty treacherous and have jumped from Ramsay to Stannis and back to Roose at different times. So this guy is probably a combination of all of them.

So, is that really Rickon that they captured and handed over? It looks like a completely different character. And are we going to have to put up with more torture crap since Ramsay is going to use him as a pawn to get Sansa to come back?

Yep it's the same actor. Puberty hits them early in the North.

Moving fast this year GoT, moving fast.....

I'm hoping the Umbers/Rickon/Osha plot thread is a feint, and I'm anxiously awaiting the appearance of the gravedigger.

The Umber was killing me with the 'Your father was a cunt' lines.
