Faithanne is obviously our in house expert. You will be very handy to pester with stupid questions.

I haven't read the books but luckily my son has so can drive him mad asking questions but only background and Who's Who, NO spoilers! I tried to catch up on the massive GoT TV marathon we've just had but it became a bit of a blur so there are still a lot of probably vital gaps in my understanding. So long as Tyrian is OK after all this I'm happy. The scene where he sent Shay (?) away to save her life was very touching but I wish the actor would decide on an accent and stick with it.

I've read the entire series and am now on my first re-read, and pretty much at the point the series is at the moment, although it jumps around a lot - the books have big gaps where you don't hear from certain characters for like a thousand pages. For instance, Bran's story in the show is about a book and a half ahead of everyone else. I've also got the helpful World of Ice & Fire app on my iPad which gives a lot of history and backstory, plus lots of detailed maps (I'm a map geek). I try to stay away from the Dark Side ie westeros.org because it is peopled by lunatics.

I won't comment on any characters in case I give too much away.

As long as Diana Riggs is in at least a few scenes I am happy.

Faithanne if you put spoilers in front of what you're going to say, I don't see why you can't talk about the characters too.

eta: I realised one of the reasons I liked this episode apart from the obvious was that dany and Jon snow weren't in it.

I'm certainly interested in the characters' back stories that put a lot of what's happening on screen into some kind of context. There's a LOT of pieces in this jigsaw and I'm getting old.

There's a great thread over on Reddit (although the rest of it is spoiler hell) where they go through each episode and fill in the gaps for non-book readers who want to know all the backstory and missing bits. I'll try and find a link.

ETA: One thing that annoys me a bit about the show is how they treated Shae's character. In the books she's only 18 and is a total gold digger - she complains about not having nice clothes and jewels, whereas show-Shae seems to love Tyrion and only whines about not seeing him because she wants to be with him, not because she's missing out on a fancy life.

ETA 2: And Sigur Ros was the band playing at Joffrey's wedding (who he chucked coins at) singing the Rains of Castamere. The whole song was played over the end credits and is hauntingly beautiful.

    Ohhhh link please?!

OK, be honest, are the books worth the effort or are they a bit Lord Of The Rings'y in which case I know I'll give up the will to live after a couple of chapters. I'm really not into fantasy/gothic as a genre so I'm a bit hesitant.

The books are incredible. They can be hard going at times - he's a stickler for detail and can spend 3 pages describing food at a feast. But I only got bogged down on my first read through when I was racing along trying to find out what happens next to all the characters, and I missed a lot of seemingly unimportant back story. But it's SO important and you don't realise until you do a re-read and things start to fall into place.

I'm not a fantasy/goth nerd but these books are entirely different. Sure there's magic, dragons etc but it's really a story about power and politics - with sword fighting!

I'm a huge fantasy nerd, and these books are indeed different. basically it's ancient Rome with dragons
It's not so much about magic stuff than it is about power and conquest (and the White Walkers of course)

They're really worth reading, the writing is beautiful, and even if his writing technique sometimes leaves us without hearing from a character for like 1000 pages, it enables him to give real depth to his characters.

Here is a link to the thread on reddit I mentioned above. It's safe for non-readers who don't want spoilers, but it explains who is who, why they're doing stuff and how the same events played out in the books:
