I actually thought Christian Bale was American for the longest time.

I think his character was supposed to be from Zimbabwe, but the accent was probably still way off. Not that I have any idea what a Zimbabwan accent should sound like, but his didn't exactly seem smooth.

You mean he's not? My God, he is such a good actor in every way.

No he's Welsh actually. He's only used his real accent in one movie. I can't remember which one though...

I think that Jamie Bamber of "Battlestar Galactic" does an awesome American accent. Look to the left if you don't know who he is. I've got him as my avatar. Also, Yvonne Whatsername on "Chuck" is Australian, and you would have no clue if you just heard her speak.

Emma Thompson did an "okay" American accent. Most Brits do an okay job as long as they don't try to do a Southern accent. Most American actors can't do a proper Southern accent either.

I love Kate Winslet's Australian accent in Holy Smoke. As for foreign actors doing English accents, I think Renee's accent in Bridget Jones is good, and Gwyneth Paltrow does a good English accent too.

Not many American actors can do foreign accents. Strangely, non American actors can do American accents (of various given slang of course, from southern to new york, etc) so perfectly. Especially New Zealanders... Lucy Lawless I remember when I was young, it was around 1995 and between the Hercules/Xena commercial during its original air they had a brief interview with Kevin Sorbo and Lucy Lawless, and I heard her speak and I was like wtf...

I thought I remember reading that he used his natural accent when he was the voice of one of the characters in Pocahontas.

Very true! I was shocked when I saw him on some behind-the-scenes thing for BG, and he busted out that accent.

    Bad:
Specifically: Jeremy Irons in Die Hard With A Vengeance
Joan Collins in everything where she was supposed to be an American

US actors doing a British accent: Richard Chamberlain was very good.
Kelsey Grammar and the guy who plays his brother on Frasier are pretty
    good.

Although Mel Gibson is originally an American, all his years in Australia
have made his American accent less convincing!

Palthrow, whom I can't stand, is pretty good at English accents.
Warren Beatty: actor, director, writer, producer.

Some nail it, some don't. I find that when they don't nail it it's because they over accentuate the hard r's and soft g's.

I find Brits do a better job with american accents than americans do with british ones.

However, the Brits DO tend to make it almost sound grammar school perfect, and need to relax the words a bit. It's not THAT harsh.

^^I would think the same could be said of Canadians doing a British accent as well. Although offhand, I can't think of a Canadian actor who's played a Brit in a film. Wait, there's Christopher Plummer but he kind of sounds British all the time.

I'll tell you what enfuriated me recently.
I have a half British accent naturally, but I am the world's greatest American accenter. I've actually done it for 24 hours straight when I stayed with these people who thought I was from America. Ha, fun times. But that's another story.

I watched Michael Clayton about a month ago and was so distracted by the terrible, cheesy American accents that Tilda Swinton and especially Tom Wilkinson put on, that I ended up not enjoying the movie (it was a bit pretentious anyway).
I mean seriously, they both got Oscar noms for that!? And fucking Tilda won the freaking thing for that????!!! It was so incredibly off-putting. If I had no idea who they were coming into that film, I still could have told you they weren't Americans.
    Foolish.
