This is the best movie I've seen since Leaving Las Vegas, and that's been years.

That scene actually made my stomach hurt - fantastic execution, so to speak. I'll be rooting for it big time at the Oscars.
I know! I was so unprepared for that scene. It was a great movie.

Best picture of the year, IMO. The acting, the story, the dialogue...loved it all. Scorsese at his finest since Goodfellas.

I thought Nicholson was miscast in this. He didn't do it for me. Everyone else was great, including supporting roles.

Kind of threw me off with the SAME mafia-connected girlfriend as in Running Scared-typecast much?

fatguy, I just now got though watching this movie and I can't believe I'm saying this...but I think I kind of agree about Nicholson here. Not that he didn't do an awesome job (as usual) but him in that role was kind of an odd fit.

Leo's officially redeemed himself from shitty movies past and hopefully on track to becoming the star I thought he would eventually end up after Gilbert Grape.

Shameless confession: I also found him completely hot in this movie. I would have tackled his ass quicker than that chick in the film. No longer does he resemble someone's younger brother (like he did next to classy Kate Winslet in 'Shitanic')

Good acting all the way around. Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Matt Damon.

    Agreed!

I've been a Leo-hater all these years, generally not a fan of his movies but he was really good in this one. I liked him enough to forget he was Leo.

I just saw this movie and I really liked it. It was a great gangster movie. The cast and the directing was flawless. Still, I'm not sure why this won Best Picture at the Oscars. It was great, but not original really.

^I agree, why it got Best Picture I'll never know. It didn't deserve it. For me, 'The Departed' was extremely disappointing. The acting was excellent (especially by Mark Wahlberg), but the story line and the entire ending sucked. The movie was dark and depressing and it had virtually no humor in it at any point, no creativity whatsoever. It was total gangster overkill...to the point of it being ridiculous. The characters were all portrayed to be just plain evil and they didn't have any other facets to them, nothing that made you connect to them, not even at certain points.

So, for me, this film was waaaaay overrated and definitely NOT one of Scorsese's best films. It was 'good', but it was NOT amazing. I enjoyed 'Casino' and 'Goodfellas' much more ...and sorry, but I'm sick of Martin Scorsese's whole New York and Italian themed movies. He needs to start thinking 'outside the box' because to me, Spielberg, Coppola, Soderbergh, Clint Eastwood and even Mel Gibson are better directors than Martin Scorsese. I've enjoyed these other directors' films much more in recent years.

ok so it didn't deserve Best Picture; but all the films I've seen lately have been horrendous! But onto another more important matter ( j/k); why does Jack Nicholson's character ask that girl in the diner during a flashback if she's "got her period yet"?! that was fuckin' sick man! but whats the significance?
