My first thought was 'Oh they have to mention Heath Ledger because he's from Perth' then they had to tie it to an American Idol contestant. I read a story that said Michael said if he won he'd dedicate it to Heath Ledger!
This week is Mariah Carey week; that should be interesting.

OH lord, do we have to listen to them butcher a Mariah song? I wonder what kind of rock version David C will do? Too bad for Kristi, no country there!

I don't like these themes that revolve around glorifying some random singer whose publicist obviously decided they needed some press.
AI is supposed to be about giving the contestants a chance to shine, and it's very hard for them to do that when they're pigeonholed into blowing smoke up some star's ass by doing a tribute performance that's usually totally unsuited to their own talents.
It doesn't help that the people they choose to focus on are karaoke-bar favorites such as Dolly Parton and Mariah Carey. The performances end up looking cheesy and tacky, even though it's obvious AI wants them to be "emotional" and "powerful" judging by the camera shots of the stars gloating while the contestants (especially the males) stumble through their songs in a state of mortification.
I prefer broader themes like "love songs" or "classic rock". I'm tired of the way they're using the show as a platform for shamelessly promoting the highest bidder. What's next? Britney Spears night? AI Pays Tribute to The Vocal Stylings of The Cast of High School Musical?

I agree completely. I haven't watched AI since season 2. Are these themes around specific artists new this year or has this been going on for awhile.
What's ironic is that the songs are getting older while the contestants are getting younger. I gave David Archuleta a pass for messing up the lyrics to We Can Work It Out. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I really felt for him. I also didn't think he did a hatchet job on it as some think. I'm sure he's familiar with who the Beatles are, but honestly, how would a just-turned 17 year old know their songs? On top of that they have 3 days to select, learn and perfect a new song on top of promotional appearances, group practice for another new song, fittings and - in his sole case - 3 hours of schooling a day!! That's not how it is in the 'real' industry.

Oh, I LOVED Tamyra-- that really sucked when she got booted.

I agree. I like it much better when they go by themes instead of songs from specific artists.

American Idol contestant David Cook will have a very special guest in the audience Tuesday and Wednesday night — his brother Adam Cook. Adam, 36, is suffering from brain cancer.
A FOX spokesperson declined to comment, however a source close to the show confirms to PEOPLE that Adam will indeed be at the studio when his brother and the other top six Idol contestants perform songs from Mariah Carey’s catalogue.
Doctors initially told Adam, who lives Indiana, his condition was too delicate for him to fly commercially. But as news spread of Adam’s health and sadness over not being able to see David perform, friends rallied and were able to get him and his wife a chartered medical jet (and medical staff), as well as a hotel room during his trip.
According to a report from the Terre Haute News, Adam’s doctors gave him the go ahead to fly to Los Angeles with his wife, Kendra, to see David perform. The Board of Directors at Clarian Health in Indianapolis are paying for the medic, nurse and Leer jet transportation while a local Terre Haute radio station is paying for the Cooks’ hotel stay.
Kendra Cook told the paper that the week prior to learning about the trip, her husband had been in bed and not feeling well for “several days in a row,” but after learning of the trip, he seemed to be feeling better.
“The excitement of seeing his spirits lifted so high has been wonderful,” she said.
Adam and Kendra plan to attend the Idol shows with a medic and a nurse.

I can't watch this week. Mariah is so untalented, I'm surprised I'm the only one who's realised she is an ape in a wig.
