I have told my husband, when I can predict this stuff, you know it's obvious and needs to be called out. I'm actually highly above average in intelligence, but stuff like this is not my forte. Or so I thought! I am getting really bored with the writers and I think they are lazy. When did TWD turn into 24 with Jack Bauer? They show you ONE episode that is meaningful going forward and/or scary, then, like clockwork, when you tune in the following week to see what really happened....NOPE. Old exposition on some character, which is really just filler until the mid-season finale. Then more "drama" to fill up the season about what other people were doing during that time, for several episodes. All to get back to that ONE exciting episode. They do this EVERY STINKIN' TIME. Is it not possible to make every episode exciting in its own way? (And I love subtle, so I'm not griping about the Morgan episode not having enough action, I'm griping about it being formulaic). Their formula is beyond old. I love the comics, always have, but this crap has exceeded my suspension of disbelief. You cannot keep pulling the same shit over and over in the later seasons. Well, I guess you can, but I will realize it for what it is: a travesty of the source material. I just ordered compendium 3 of the comics...somehow I don't think I will feel the same about it that I do the show that I once loved.

I can't wait for negan to finally make an apearance. Henry rollins entering the mix. That's going to rock. And again, glen isn't dead. He slid under the dumpster and rick is coming for him.

Somebody better get to Rick before he can help Glenn. I'm betting Daryl to Rick and then Daryl to return to the herd, then Rick to Glenn.

Do you guys still feel that this show is as good as it was in the past? Am I the only one who thinks it is totally formulaic? There are variables involved, but the equation is almost always the same. I find it insulting as a viewer, whereas I used to look forward to it. I don't get why others aren't seeing the same bull I am, when it seems fairly obvious.

Lastlook, yes I agree. The show is great entertainment and I tune in each week to find out who dies or what happens next. I'm not going to riot or stop watching the show because a certain character dies. I was about to abandon the show through that Beth bullshit. Having Daryl on the screen wasn't enough. I seriously disliked Beth. I wanted her gone so much.

I will admit, repetition is setting into the script.

It's based on a comic book - I'm not expecting "Remembrance of Things Past".

As much as I bitch, I still think it is a great show but not every episode is going to be A+ and that's okay. I hope it is on for years to come.

^ that's how I see it as well. It's like the Sopranos, some episodes are great, some mediocre and some barely watchable (the dream episodes come immediately to mind).

It's just a TV show. If it entertains you, watch it. If it doesn't, don't.

I think the show is doing great. It's still the most watched.
I really loved lost and was so upset when it ended because that was quality time spent with my son. LOL.

Now we watch this together every week. He works so much so we hardly ever get time to watch things anymore.
I heard it is already good for 3 more seasons.

Sure, it's formulaic as hell. Black guy gets killed off before they introduce another black guy, that happens constantly. Can't have more than a certain percentage of black characters or the audience isn't comfortable according to marketing. And yes, I'm sick of the age old question of whether Rick is a good guy or a bad guy, if he is a good leader or a bad leader, if he is healthy or unbalanced. For my personal preference, I wish it was Rick lying under a pile of zombies right now. I'm sick of the guy.

But there is Carol who has developed into a bad ass. She and Daryl are about the only characters who have been allowed to develop in any meaningful way.

And frankly, I want a little peace time or something tangible these people are fighting for - some collective agreement and some genuine consensus would be nice to see. Instead, everyone just goes with Rick or holds on to secrets that nearly get everyone killed. Admittedly, when I watch this show, I'm up and down doing other things. The constant gore fest isn't fun, with all the contrived tensions (oh, Morgan is holding onto a Wolf to rehabilitate him? Yeah, that's going to end well.) But my husband loves the show so I'm puttering around while he hugs the dog during the horrible parts.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. Your criticism is valid for you. It's not Igmar Bergman or even The Wire. It's just a middling show and shouldn't be held up to any lofty standards. There are lots of other shows to choose from if WD isn't cranking your clock anymore.

No, no, no, I didn't mean it that way. I only spend time bitching about things that I really believe in. If I thought this show had no future, I wouldn't bother! I'm not saying I could make it better...just pointing out some weaknesses. If you follow the scientific method, you know that's how the good is delineated from the bad. These writers have gotten way too comfortable. I'm not saying I hate it, I'm saying it could be better in ways that I think are right there for the taking. That's all.

I feel that way about A LOT of shows! Yes, there are simple methods for making them better (that have nothing to do with the scientific method. WTF?) Think about this - shows are controlled by advertisers who want predictability in the product that sells their brands. Writers are often forced to rewrite the same scenarios, over and over again, because advertisers and marketers demand strict consistency. If producers of the show tell the advertisers that "we're going in a brand new direction this year!" that causes panic and the ad men abandon the show. Some shows even allow big advertisers to edit scripts and decide on whole storylines, much like big corps get to edit the news shows for favorable stories.

If a show on a middling network, like AMC, draws better advertisers that an increase profits, the more predictable and repetitive the shows become. That explains why TWD is stuck in the loop of Rick's Leadership quandary, where it's been for 3 seasons now.

Have you considered maybe that's what I'm talking about? Stuff that would keep advertisers on board? Either way, I'm not interested in arguing unless it is speculative and friendly. Like I said, I wouldn't waste my time griping if I didn't care.

ETA: I take it back. I re-read your last argument and I really want no part of it. No offense.
