Default Noooo!! New U.S. version of 'Absolutely Fabulous' in the works

Not for the first time, an American TV network is trying to import the UK's Absolutely Fabulous to the States.

Fox is working on an LA twist to the adventures of Jennifer Saunders' Edina and Patsy, netting executive producers Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum for Sony Pictures TV, Tantamount, and BBC Worldwide America, along with Saturday Night Live writer Christine Zander teamed with BBC's Ian Moffet and series creator Saunders.

Operating under the notion that if it ain't broke don't fix it, the only real difference in the American versus the British version is that our beloved, devastatingly unhip wannabe cougars will be terrorizing the streets of Los Angeles rather than London. And, as we know, there is all sorts of fabulous trouble to get into here in the City of Angels!

But wait…we're experiencing a strong sense of déjà vu!

    A show, from the 90s…

A washed up actress in LA causing mischielf with her best friend as her daughter disapproves…

Starring Cybill Shepherd perhaps? And the much better Christine Baranski!

The networks have gone too far.

There will never be another Patsy and Edina.

    Wow.

Ok, this sounds like a terrible, terrible idea.

I do love the American version of The Office BUT I've never watched the original, so I didn't start off making comparisons. The show might be ok for people who have never seen the real one but otherwise.... NO.

I like the US version of The Office too, but as you said, I've never seen the original. There is just no duplicating THIS show though. Not with all the political correctness in this country...no way.

This shit just has to stop, hopefully this is just a rumor. ABFAB was perfect and can't be improved.

Other than the Office haven't all of the great British comedies failed over in the US when they've tried to remake them?

The British Office is so much funnier than the Ameriecan version. Much more subtle and it didn't drag on too long. Coupling is one of my fav. shows. The US version was horrible!

Ab Fab is too good to re-make! No one could ever be as good as Patsie and Edie!!

I'm a bit horrified but the Arrested Development team is involved so maybe it won't totally suck.

    US remake for Absolutely Fabulous
Absolutely Fabulous is getting a US makeover.

The British sitcom is being remade for American audiences, and will be set in Los Angeles rather than London.

The original show ran from 1992-2005 with Jennifer Saunders as the label-loving PR guru Edina Monsoon and Joanna Lumley as Patsy Stone, her Bollinger-swigging best friend. Julia Sawalha played Edina's disapproving daughter, Saffy.

Saunders will act as executive producer on the US version but the show will have a new cast.

The Fox series is to be made by the team behind hit comedy Arrested Development, with Saturday Night Live's Christine Zander as scriptwriter.

This is the second time America has tried to remake Ab Fab - the first, with Roseanne Barr and Carrie Fisher, was mooted more than a decade ago but failed to get past the pilot stage.

Jon Plowman, executive producer of the BBC original, has doubts that the show can be transplanted successfully to LA.

"The trouble with doing Ab Fab in America is that it will have to end with Edina and Saffy hugging, Patsy giving up drink and drugs, and them all hugging mum. It won't work. It'll be too nice," he told Broadcast. "Let's hope they get it right."

Although some US remakes of British shows have proved a success - notably Steve Carell replacing Ricky Gervais in an American version of The Office - many others have flopped, including versions of Fawlty Towers, Cold Feet and Coupling.

Little Britain USA has failed to win over American audiences, with the Washington Post branding some sketches "too tasteless even for a celebration of bad taste" and Variety opining that "the wit level of these over-the-top interludes seldom rises above what's scrawled on a middle-school bathroom wall".

That's wrong in so many ways. There is only one Ab Fab!
