Default Name the top 10 greatest actors alive today

My cousin and I were having this debate from some poll he saw about who are the 10 greatest actors alive. So, I thought it'd be an interesting thread.

So, name the top 10 best actors alive today, in no particular order. Mine are:

    Denzel Washington
    Russell Crowe
    Forest Whitaker
    Robert DeNiro
    Al Pacino
    Kevin Spacey
    Sidney Poitier
    Tom Hanks
    Anthony Hopkins
    Edward Norton

I don't dislike all women. Why are you singling me out for abuse? I'm going to tell on you, dammit.

Seriously, the reason why I started this list was because my cousin tried to convince me that Tom Cruise was a better actor than Russell Crowe. I was like WTF?

And how did I forget Jack Nicholson?

I'm just joking you my love. I actually couldn't come up with a list that was any better than yours (besides adding Johnny Depp), so I had to say something. haha

And Tom Cruise is NOT better than Russell Crowe.

^^You hurt my feelings. I'm telling Al Sharpton. j/k

And I don't know what my cousin was smoking when he said Cruise was better than Crowe.

If I to pick only one actor (male)....I'd pick probably Russell Crowe or Daniel Day-Lewis. Probably DDL.

It would be a toss-up between those 2 with me as well. Either one of them can play absolutely anything and the audience will take them seriously. I cannot think of a single bad perf either has given.

    In no particular order:

    Hal Holbrook
    Wilford Brimley
    Michael Caine
    Kevin Spacey
    Morgan Freeman
    Tom Hanks
    Joaquin Phoenix
    Anthony Hopkins
    Gene Hackman
    Robert Duvall

That's 10. Here's more whom I think are also excellent, most of the time:
    Louis Gossett, Jr.
    Warren Beatty
    Kevin Kline
    Sam Neill
    Donald Sutherland
    James Whitmore

As you can see, my preference goes out to character actors.
And I'm not kidding: I think Brimley and Holbrook are brilliant
in their understated, natural, laid back style. I'd rather look
at them than most of the supposed "pretty" actors of today.

I left out DeNiro and Pacino because they do have the talent,
they're just not using it anymore while they are still making
movies. DeNiro made the unfortunate choice to rather
indiscriminately pick "humorous" parts that he then wings
his way through. Pacino, following that same "logic" has been
screaming his way through movies since the early '90s, Hoffman
same as the two mentioned: they have become characters
more than they are playing them.
Redford was never a wide range actor and now that his
looks are gone, uhm, have matured - he can't fall back on
the mannerisms that used to carry him in his prime.
Newman was good, but also somewhat limited.

And no: I didn't put Beatty on my second list because
I have a geriatric crush, but because I feel he has been
seriously underrated for much of his work.
Warren Beatty: actor, director, writer, producer.

HWBL, I agree with all you have written. I would also like to add, and please don't hit me, that I think Jack Nicholson is over-rated. He has been absolutely brilliant in many of his roles and a down right ham in others. As someone said on another thread, he seems more an exhibitionist than an actor. He DOES NOT leave his ego at the door when he walks into a role, which is an essential part of being an actor.
