    Default The Ruins

It opens Friday. I read the book. It was actually kind of scary. Unputdownable. The movie is getting some good reviews so I am there this Friday!

    Here's a preview clip:

I just ripped through the book. The whole premise was so creepy. So I hope they live up to it in the movie. There are far too few good horror flicks out there.

I read the book and was wondering if they'd change the end for the movie.

I saw the preview and it looks great, but I've never read the book. What is it about?

    Without giving too much away...

Some couples on vacation in Mexico meet a German tourist who convinces them to help him find his little brother who went off into the jungle with his girlfriend to find some ruins and disappeared. They encounter weird natives and instead of turning the hell back like most sensible people would they continue on, looking for adventure, until they find a hill covered in red flowers.

    Freaky scary shit ensues.

It's a good book. Suspenseful anyway. What's better than the scary stuff is how the relationships between the friends change and the unpredictable things people do in life or death situations.

I was disappointed in the film. It was kind of scary but more gory than anything. Very high on the gore factor. It didn't capture the relationships between the hikers imo. It was kind of flat in that regard. Entertaining, but I'd say it's a 'wait to rent it' movie.

I read a synopsis of the novel:

The Ruins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The movie was quite different in many ways from the book, yes it is totally hollywoodized meaning up the gore factor as per usual. In fact they changed so many little things that it seems like two different things besides the main theme. Everything from the characters and their actions was changed. Even if there were no book I would have found the movie disappointing, just the usual hysterical group of people. When you also find out the main premise of the movie, you're like, that's it? And it seems like the film makers were trying to flesh out the movie. The book seems like it is more intense.

^^You should read the book celeb 2006. It was very good. Why does HW always wreck good reads? They dumb down everything. it could have been a very interesting film. Oh well.

I hated the book- well, maybe not hated, but it bored me

The book disappointed me.... it's like the writer got to a point where they were going to come up with a real explanation for everything but then just went oh fuck it.

I just finished reading the book ... like two minutes ago.

It wasn't scary at all. I was sort of on board until the vines started talking. Are you fucking kidding me? That was just plain stupid and completely ruined the story for me. I also don't understand why it was called The Ruins when there were no ruins [aside from the mine shaft that was only a hole in the ground]. It was just a hill. *yawn* The ending was predictable and flat. Give me a twist and surprise me ... did the author not even try to think of a good ending?

I've read better. This guy will never be the next Stephen King, that's for sure.
