Its slightly sad that I'm happy john cusack was in two of the movies on the list...whats even more sad is that the only reason I SAW said movies was because he was in them.

I've seen most of the movies on here though...except for Amores perros...I cant bring myself to watch it, because I cant help but think of that guy being in Mala educación, La, which basically seemed like softcore gay porn. I cant watch any movie with Gael García Bernal without thinking of that movie...

Swingers, Evil Dead, TCM, Cube, Run Lola Run, Memento, Donnie Darko, Reservoir Dogs - all amazing. But, The Terminator? I didn't think that was Independent. And The Passion doesn't deserve to be up there, ugh.

For all of you who "get" "Lost in Translation", can you take a minute to explain it to me? I THOUGHT I got the gist of it, but I hated it and thought it was SOOO boring that maybe I didn't.

I am SO happy to see "Clerks", "Life of Brian", "Sideways", and "The Evil Dead" make the list. Those are GREAT!

I don't know if there's anything to "get" about Lost In Translation. It's a relationship movie, not an action movie, and nothing really "happens": no murders, no affairs, no bank heists. I guess that's why a lot of people hated it? Because it's a character-driven movie, not action- or plot-driven? Personally, I like a well-made story in which the characters grow or have some kind of journey. I guess that's why I liked it so much. That, and I've always loved Bill Murray, Giovanni Ribisi, Scarlett Johansson.

I hated Lost in Translation because it stars two of my least favorite people: Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray. I think Scarlett Johnasson just thinks that she is the next Marilyn Monroe and Bill Murray thinks he's hilarious. The entire movie to me was just the two of them secretly gloating over how talented they are and how they were doing such a "deep" movie.

Bill Murray is god, sorry. He was wonderful in that movie, he's wonderful in Groundhog Day, he's wonderful in Stripes, and he's wonderful in Rushmore and Life Aquatic, as well. I will have his babies if he asks me to.

I agree with Ho... there's not a lot to "get". People expecting too much to happen won't "get" it, though, I guess. It's mostly just a story about two people who don't really know what they want and aren't very happy, who develop a friendship or sort of platonic romance.

If you want to read into it, you could say it's about feeling disconnected, lost. One thing that struck me about it was this feeling of... how precious some times in your life can be. They will never see each other again, but they had that time together. It's sad, but it's beautiful, too.

The silences, the lighting, the scenery, the subtle expressions on the actors' faces, the dialogue... it all comes together to create this sort of... melancholy, loneliness, and longing. I think the movie creates that atmosphere very well.

ETA: I have noticed that a lot of people that didn't like the movie either 1)wanted more to happen, and prefer stories to have a real climax, or 2)couldn't relate to or sympathize with the characters. I think those two things will get in the way of enjoying the movie.

I'm so happy Slacker made the list! I was the first person in college to discover it and love it to this day. But can 'Life of Brian' really be considered independent? Fantastic film, accompanying doc almost better, but independent?

I "got" Lost in Translation, but I thought it was boring as fuck. Maybe I need to watch it again... And I'm not the type to whine about no action, I drive my mum crazy with films with almost only talking for two hours straight, so I guess THAT'S not the problem.

I haven't seen a lot of the films on the list, but I agree with most of the ones I've seen: The Blair Witch Project, Buffalo 66 (am I the only one who really enjoyed that?), Being John Malkovich (BRILLIANT), Bad Taste, Memento, Life of Brian, Donnie Darko and Clerks

haha i just bought a new copy of Resevoir Dogs on DVD today! i love love love Lost in Translation. i watch it all the time. CLerks is awesome too. but when i watched Blair Witch the camera was so wobbley i puked and was miserable for hours afterward. that made me hate it.
