Three years after cable TV hit Sex and the City went dark, the lights are reportedly coming on for a new movie version set to start production this fall.

New Line Cinema is finalizing a deal with the producers of the sexy HBO cable series for a movie adaptation, according to a report from Hollywood industry publication Variety.

The new project will unite the Emmy Award-winning show's stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall as dating columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her trio of high powered girlfriends Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.

The movie will also feature the creative executives who were behind the TV series: executive producer Michael Patrick King is set to direct a script that he wrote and to produce the project alongside Parker, John Melfi and series creator Darren Star.

Three years ago, as the series prepared to wind down after six seasons, fans began calling for a movie version, with demand intensifying after the February 2004 finale.

In the years since, a previous movie attempt was reportedly nixed when Canadian actress Cattrall was unhappy with the project.

No announcement has yet been made about whether the show's supporting cast — including Parker's key love interest Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth — will join the new film.

Based on writer Candace Bushnell's series of New York Observer newspaper columns about life as a single woman in the Big Apple, Sex and the City drew legions of largely female fans for its frank discussions of sex, dating and relationships, unabashed devotion to fashion, romantic depiction of Manhattan and quartet of strong female leads.

i hope the big build up for this flick doesnt let me down. and how on EARTH could they do this without mr. big??? and Charlotte and Harry, what a great love story. I'm a cheeseball

Yikes. Imagine the amount the movie studio is gonna spend on digital airbrushing. No one wants to see Carrie Bradshaw for the haggard beard that she really is.

I'm so glad that Cattrall's on board. She's my favourite part of the show! Meh, I can do without Big, as long as all four of them are together.

I love Sex & the City but isn't this too late?

You know they are gonna ruin it. Why can't those producers just let it be? I like how it ended.

But if Steve is in the movie, I'll probably go watch it. He's my favorite boy on the show!

I'm very unsure about this. I love the show and i'm always watching the seasons on DVD. But I just can't see the movie doing good. I mean, don't get me wrong I would love it to be great, but I don't see it happening. Even around season 5 it got to be a bit annoying. Just leave it as it is.

agreed. and i really didn't like the last season. i don't think this movie is a good idea.

I wouldn't mind a movie. I still watch the repeats of Sex and the City every week. I'd definitely want to see Big come back ... he was The One for Carrie and I was so happy they finally got together at the end. I'd like to see what happened there.

Samantha was my least favorite character and Miranda was my favorite ... you know, at one time I'd watch the show and think why the f- can't she be gay?
