Default The new Dr Who could be a..a.. 'Woman' (oh noez, the world is going to end.. lol ;)

Jodie Whittaker will take over from Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor Who

Come in number 12, your time is up!

The long wait for Doctor Who fans is finally over as The BBC finally confirmed Jodie Whittaker will be the 13th Doctor.

Speculation about who would takeover as the nation’s favourite time traveller has been widespread since current incumbent Peter Capaldi announced his departure.

High profile names like Olivia Colman, Kris Marshall , Tilda Swinton and Sherlock’s Andrew Scott had been rumoured to take over the role and proved popular with bookies .

After a one minute teaser was released on Friday confirming the wait was coming to an end, #DoctorWho13 began trending on social media.

In a special announcement on BBC One, Jodie Whittaker was unveiled as the new Doctor, who will replace Peter Capaldi later in the year.

It was a brief, but exciting, reveal. Perhaps the BBC learned a lesson after Capaldi’s Zoe Ball fronted reveal was dogged by awkward moments and technical problems.

It will be the first time in the show’s 53 year history that the character of The Doctor will be played by a woman. But calls for a female Doctor go back as far as the 1970’s. Each time the lead announces they are departing, speculation becomes rife that a woman would step into the role. However, in the world of Doctor Who female Timelords - sometimes known as Time Ladies - have been around for decades. During the show’s classic era, Time Lady Romana travelled with The Doctor and seemingly had the ability to change her appearance until she found one she liked.

Later in the modern universe of Doctor Who, showrunner Steven Moffat had gone further to hint that the change is not set in stone. From the introduction of Michelle Gomez as Missy, a female incarnation of The Master, an onscreen regeneration of a Timelord from man to woman and one-liners that jokingly infer The Doctor may have been a woman before.

In the run up to the announcement, the increasing chance of a woman taking the titular lead found mixed reaction from fans, with some going so far as to claim they would boycott the show before the next Doctor’s first on screen appearance had even aired.

The accolade of being The Doctor means Jodie can add their name to an impressive list of names so far. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, John Hurt, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi have portrayed the Timelord since his first adventure back in 1963.

Current incumbent Peter Capaldi announced earlier in the year that he would be leaving the show, alongside current showrunner Steven Moffat .

Capaldi first appeared in the show for a brief cameo in the 50th anniversary special The Day Of The Doctor, before taking over full time in 2014.

But before Capaldi departs, his Doctor still has one final adventure on Christmas Day. The festive outing sees the 12th Doctor meet with the 1st Doctor, played by David Bradley.

The Harry Potter and Game Of Thrones star will take on the role originally played by William Hartnell from 1963 to 1966

Bradley is no stranger to the world of the 1st Doctor, having played William Hartnell in the Doctor Who origin drama An Adventure In Space And Time.

Outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat will be handing over the show to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall. Moffat has stated that Chibnall will write the very end of the 2017 Christmas Special, which will introduce Jodie as the 13th Doctor.

I fucking called this last week when talking to Bloke. I told him they were setting it up, I told him that they would have a woman Dr soon but noooooo, according to him I was wrong as a very wrong thing can be wrong.

And I don't even watch Dr Who.

I agree, Kitty. Ever since they introduced Missy, i thought they were testing the waters.

I am stoked, though. I'm a huge fan (but i think i'm too old to be a 'Whovian') and have been waiting for this. it makes me very happy.
